Erlangen is setting an example in climate protection: progress and challenges!
In the city of Erlangen, municipal climate protection is being pushed forward with vigor, despite the underlying conditions not always being easy. How Wiesentbote reported, a climate emergency was declared in 2019. Since 2020, Erlangen has been working on achieving greenhouse gas neutrality as part of “Climate Awakening”. The current status report now provides a balance sheet of developments and progress to date.
A comprehensive package of measures, consisting of 41 initiatives, ensures that progress does not stall. Of these, 26 are already being implemented, while 8 further projects are about to be implemented. From October 2024, the Klimamobil will be an advice center where city residents can receive support on energy renovation and renewable energies.
Climate protection measures
A roadmap for the greenhouse gas-neutral renovation of urban buildings has been drawn up, as has the enactment of municipal heating plans without fossil fuels. In order to increase the visibility and acceptance of climate protection measures, the “Erlanger Climate Alliance” communication campaign was launched. This happens as part of an economic network that promotes locally environmentally friendly projects.
The mobility progress is also considerable: over 300 rental bikes are part of the VAG_Rad program and there are also 10 mobile points with electric charging stations and car sharing options. Initiatives to promote climate-friendly mobility, such as the pedestrian traffic concept and the Bohlenplatz parking space concept, show that the city is following a clear course here too.
Challenges in climate protection
In 2022, final energy consumption in Erlangen fell by 5%, while CO2 emissions rose slightly. What is worrying is that the remaining CO2 budget has been used up to comply with the 1.5 degree limit; The city council is currently focusing on the budget to comply with the 1.75 degree limit.
Current developments and local events
In other local news, the city is also looking forward to increasing cemetery fees to cover costs and keep the cemeteries as well-maintained places. There will be a new fee statute from January 1, 2026.
If you want to experience something extraordinary in November: the lost and found bike auction will be held by the Erlanger job center on November 8th. There are also regular shopping nights where the shops are open until 11 p.m.
All citizens are also invited to take part in the final adaptation work of the city's infrastructure this year. The streets Am Lobersberg between Steudach and Neuses as well as the Hartmannstraße/Schenkstraße intersection are currently closed until November 16th in order to carry out work on the district heating network.
The city of Erlangen shows that it has a good knack for climate protection measures, even if the challenges cannot be underestimated. It is important to continue on this path together and keep our eyes open for sustainable solutions in the future.
