Erlangen in a state of emergency: Arena Festival 2025 celebrates kitsch and creativity!
The city of Erlangen is getting ready for a big event: the 35th edition of the Arena Festival will take place from June 19th to 22nd, 2025. This student-organized festival has established itself as a hotspot for dance, theater and performance and is once again offering a colorful program under the motto “Kitsch”. NN.de reports that a total of six national and international productions are on stage, offering viewers new perspectives on performance art.
Visitors can look forward to a varied supporting program that, in addition to the performances, also includes audience formats, exciting discussions, workshops and lively parties. Since 1991, the festival has offered a platform for innovative theater and dance enthusiasts, with a clear focus on contemporary, multimedia and experimental productions. This often happens in unconventional venues in public spaces, which makes the experience even more unique for the audience.

The highest point of the festival will be the opening on Thursday, June 19th at 7:30 p.m. with the provocative piece “Fuck the State, I Love You,” which will also be shown on Saturday, June 21st at 3 p.m. There are also many other interesting performances on the program:

The Importance of Audience Ratings
Another highlight of the current theater season are the audience ratings, which are also relevant at the Arena Festival. How South Tyrol News reports, theater performances in South Tyrol receive a special award from the audience: the Finstral Audience Prize is awarded to the best productions. In the 2022/23 season, the Thalia Theater in Hamburg won for its remarkable production of the play “Birds”. An impressive 97 percent of viewers gave it top marks!
This concept impressively shows how important audience feedback is for the theater landscape. Even the smaller theaters, such as the Next Liberty Theater in Graz, which regularly performs in South Tyrol and has been awarded for its children's and youth theater programs, prove that the stage offers a lively community for all age groups.
In summary, the Arena Festival 2025 offers the opportunity to experience contemporary art in an inspiring atmosphere. It will be exciting to see which works will delight the audience - the stage belongs to the artists and the audience!
