Erlangen needs your memories: forced labor exhibition being planned!

In an important initiative, the Erlangen City Museum and the Chair of Eastern European History at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg are committed to coming to terms with the history of forced laborers in the region. Today, on August 15, 2025, it was announced that they are working on an exhibition that aims to make the personal fates of these people visible and to integrate their voices into the culture of remembrance. Erlangen.de reports that the support of the population is essential here.

Those responsible invite citizens to provide documents, work books, letters or photos that are connected to the history of forced laborers. Memorabilia that are often kept in families or contain personal stories about this time are particularly interesting. Homemade objects, such as forced laborers' toys, are also welcome in order to paint a more comprehensive picture of the time.

Call for collaboration

In addition, information is being sought on former forced laborers who remained in Erlangen, as well as on contacts that existed after the end of the war. The city and the university look forward to receiving valuable feedback from the community. If you would like to help, you can contact us by phone at 09131 86-2849 or by email at stadtmuseum@stadt.erlangen.de.

This valuable initiative shows the importance of preserving the stories of people who have suffered in dark times. Because only by remembering can we continue to develop an awareness of history and justice in the future.

As part of such historical research projects, it becomes clear that looking back teaches us to appreciate the present even more. With a comprehensive collection of memories from Erlangen, the city museum will ensure that the stories of forced laborers remain anchored in the consciousness-raising of future generations.

Who would know better about the forced labor period than the people who have memories of it themselves? Let's use this opportunity to bring history to life together.
