In the past decades, breastfeeding behavior in Germany was strongly influenced by the commercialization of infant food, which led to a decline in the breastfeeding rate.

In order to meet the current challenges, around 90 % of pregnant women have the intention of breastfeeding, but the actual breastfeeding rate in the first few months is only 40 %. Breastfeeding in public is still perceived as problematic, since breastfeeding women often harvest looks that are not always benevolent. Katrin Andrä, midwife in Dachau, confirms that many women have inhibitions to breastfeed publicly. Jennifer Benson himself experienced both positive experiences and negative reactions, especially on the part of the staff in cafés and restaurants.

Special rooms are available in the Dachau district office, where mothers can breastfeed or wrap in a relaxed atmosphere. Another example of a still-friendly municipality can be found in Bonn, where a new still and changing room was set up in the service center. This room is accessible to all parents and offers a calm, protected surroundings for breastfeeding. Among other things, attention for such rooms should raise awareness of breastfeeding among the population - a step that is also becoming more important in Dachau, as the current response to the project shows.

The key to the success of the “Still -friendly Community” initiative lies in the broad networking and the unbureaucratic implementation, which invites mothers to continue the breastfeeding as long as it is pleasant for them and their child. Jennifer Benson also thinks that the initiative is valuable support in order to restore the feeling of normality when breastfeeding in public.
