Four-year-old Matheo fulfills his dream trip to the sea – a great gift!

A little boy with big dreams: Matheo from Bad Rodach wanted nothing more than to go to the sea with his mom. Despite his stressful diagnosis of an advanced tumor disease, which required him to be cared for in the children's palliative care center in Erlangen, he was able to fulfill this heartfelt wish. The Foundation for Children with Cancer in Coburg has now made this dream a reality and sent Matheo on a four-day trip to Warnemünde infranken.de reported.

Matheo's mother was able to take part in this trip and witness her son's happiness. “It’s just a great gift for him to experience his first time by the sea!” she enthuses. The family was able to enjoy the fresh breeze, the fine sand and the playful waves. But the trip wasn't just a visit to the beach - Matheo also experienced an exciting ride on the Molli swimming pool, visited a swimming pool and feasted in inviting restaurants. Yvonne Hadert, the dedicated social worker from the children's palliative care center, ensured that the family was able to share their experiences via email every day, which made the trip another highlight in Matheo's winding story.

Background: Childhood cancer and palliative care

Unfortunately, Matheo's case is not an isolated one. Every year around 2,000 children in Germany develop cancer. The German Childhood Cancer Registry, which has been active since 1980 and has recorded over 60,000 cases, shows that the probability of developing cancer by the age of 15 is around 0.2%. The vast majority of cancers have a long-term survival probability of over 75%, but some diseases, such as acute myeloid leukemia, can significantly reduce the chances of survival, according to the Foundation for Children with Cancer in one of its reports. stiftung-krebskranke-kinder.de

Palliative care is an important part of the care for seriously ill children. A uniform therapy plan emerges here, which is adapted depending on the disease. The Society for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology plays a crucial role in this. In addition, the psychological and physical strain on families is enormous. Self-help groups and support from specially trained clinical teachers can help make your time in the hospital easier. The Oskar worry and information hotline, which is available around the clock and is aimed at those affected and those grieving, also offers helpful information on these topics. Thanks to the help of foundations and the tireless work of professionals, it is possible for children like Matheo to experience moments of happiness despite their serious illnesses. Wish fulfillment is more than just a journey – it is a ray of hope in dark times. A ray of hope worth fighting for every day.
