Candidate carousel: Who will be mayor of Coburg?

An exciting political year lies ahead for the city of Coburg, as the next local elections in Bavaria are scheduled for March 8, 2026. Preparations are already in full swing and citizens can look forward to an exciting election. On this day, both a new city council and a new city leader are elected. The list of possible candidates for the mayoral election is getting longer and more diverse.

The political landscape in Coburg is currently very dynamic. Dominik Sauerteig, who has been acting mayor since May 2020, is being put into the race by the SPD. The Social Democrats were the strongest force in 2020 and won 23.4% of the vote, which secured them 9 seats on the city council. But Sauerteig has competition: Hans-Herbert Hartan from the CSU, who is currently in office as second mayor, could also run.

The race for the head of the city

Another hot candidate who is in the starting blocks is Uwe Meyer from the Pro Coburg voters' association. At the annual general meeting, Meyer was unanimously proposed as the top candidate, but the final nomination is still pending. This decision will certainly be eagerly awaited by many people in Coburg, as Pro Coburg has split off from the Free Voters and is now planning its own list. According to Fränkischer Tag and Nordbayerische Press Meyer could be in an exciting position as he is considered an experienced politician.

The other potential candidates should not be forgotten: Wolfram Haupt from the Greens, Christian Gunsenheimer from the Free Voters and Joachim Hoppe from the Left are also in the discussion. The Greens, which received 15.4% of the vote in 2020 and took 6 seats on the city council, have seen some defections recently, which could affect their chances.

The city council election and new lists

There could be twelve different lists in the city council election in 2026. In addition to the parties already mentioned, the Junge Union and the Left are also relying on a stronger presence. The Left has regrouped and is aiming to win three seats. However, the AfD, which is also running for election, is having difficulty finding suitable replacements after several members withdrew.

The CSU plans to set up a search committee for its city council list, which is to be nominated in autumn 2025. This strategic planning shows that all parties still have a lot of work to do before the election. The voting communities will do everything they can to consolidate or even expand their position in the city council.

The next few months will be crucial to finalize the heads and lists. A good hand in selecting candidates could make the difference for some parties. While the political camps regroup and fight for voters' favor, it remains to be seen who will win on March 8, 2026. The people of Coburg can look forward to an exciting election campaign!
