Three police operations in cases of thefts and accidents in Cham!
On July 4, 2025, a 73-year-old woman in Cham presented herself as a thief when she tried to steal a skirt worth 50 euros from a fashion store. The alert staff caught her before she could leave the store. A report of theft will follow, as is the case Upper Palatinate-current reported.
What does this mean for retail in the region? The statistics speak volumes: retailers lose around 13 million euros every day due to theft - a worrying trend that is partly encouraged by self-service checkouts. Almost three quarters of thefts come from customers, and this causes around three billion euros in damage every year WDR determines.
More incidents in the area
Meanwhile, another incident in Roding caused a stir. On the same day, a wallet worth around 150 euros was stolen from an unlocked truck on Jahnstrasse between 1 and 2 p.m. The police in Cham are asking witnesses to call 09971 / 8545-0.
There was also a dangerous traffic situation not far away. On the CHA 55 district road near Windischbergerdorf, a Ford driver had to avoid a right-hand bend and ended up in a ditch. The driver of an oncoming black car was unable to stay in his lane and fled unrecognized. Information about the vehicle or the driver is urgently required.
A rapid operation in Traitsching
In Traitsching, emergency services also responded on July 4th when a 22-year-old in a psychological state of emergency caused a disturbance. He resisted violently when the handcuffs were put on, but remained uninjured. He was admitted to a specialist clinic and is being investigated for resisting law enforcement officers.
The increase in such incidents highlights the challenges facing police and retailers in recent years. Thefts are not only committed by opportunist thieves, but also by organized gangs that work efficiently and in a division of labor. The estimated annual investments by retailers in security – over three billion euros for detective operations and protective measures – illustrate the seriousness of the situation.
The problems are manifold: people steal because of financial hardship, as a protest against high prices or simply as a crime of opportunity. In addition, a large proportion of thefts – a shocking 98 percent – remain undetected. As a result, many dealers are frustrated and are increasingly holding back from reporting to the police because conviction rates are low.
The challenge for local retailers is not only dealing with everyday problems, but also preventing and combating theft. It remains to be seen what measures companies and local authorities will take to stop these developments.
