Storm alarm in southeast Bavaria: thunderstorms, hail and squalls are threatening!

A look out the window gives you an idea: the weather is going crazy today on June 15, 2025. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a level two severe weather warning for southeast Bavaria, which is valid until at least 7 p.m. Violent thunderstorms are moving across the region from the southwest, with the east of the Traunstein district and the north of the Berchtesgadener Land district particularly affected. The first thunderstorm cells can already be felt in the Altötting district and in the east. According to Rosenheim24, there could be up to 60 liters of precipitation per square meter, and hail is not ruled out either.

Before the thunderstorms it can get oppressively hot: temperatures between 28 and 33 degrees make the weather humid and unpleasant. This heat wave reached its peak on June 14th at 35.5 degrees in Kitzingen. From 5 p.m. the risk of severe weather will increase for the entire region. There are possible heavy rains of up to 25 liters in an hour and gusts of wind that can reach speeds of up to 85 km/h. In addition, the formation of supercells with particularly high storm potential is in the air.

There is a threat of heavy rain and hail

For the period from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning, warning levels of up to three even apply to large parts of Bavaria, as [Augsburger Allgemeine](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/bayern/deutscher-wetterdienst-warnt-in-diesen-landkreisen-kommen-es-ab-sonntag-zu-unwettern-109503192) reports. The Alpine region and eastern Bavaria are particularly affected. The weather forecast assumes local heavy rain of up to 20 liters per square meter to extreme amounts of over 40 liters in a short period of time. Hailstones with diameters of up to three centimeters and gusts of up to 100 km/h are also possible.

What to do in storms?

The DWD gives numerous recommendations for action that should not be ignored: It is advisable to avoid spending time outdoors and to seek protection from falling branches or objects. Water should be avoided and loose objects should be secured. Particular attention is required in road traffic: drive carefully and avoid dangerous sections. Windows and doors should be closed in good time, and if there is a risk of flooding, it is advisable to leave the basement immediately.

The threat of severe weather will continue into the early hours of June 16, while a cold front should bring some improvement on Monday night. Current information is available at Unwetterzentrale, where ongoing warnings are displayed and the population can be informed in good time.
