Art festival in Bayreuth: Experience masterpieces from the 40s!

An exciting weekend is coming up at the Bayreuth Art Museum! On November 15th and 16th, 2025, the motto will be “See art, experience art, make art”. The exhibition “Art in Bayreuth – Works from the 1940s to 1960s” will be open to art lovers until mid-February 2024. This show takes a look at the art scene after the Second World War and its social position in a time that was strongly characterized by destruction and new beginnings. With the flourishing of art in this region, which attracted many artists after the war, the exhibition offers exciting insights into a special era in German art history.

Did you know that the Bayreuth Free Group was founded in 1951? This artists' association consisted of talented minds who valued individuality and creativity. They started with their first exhibition, which took place at the same time as the first Richard Wagner Festival after the war and attracted a total of around 3,000 visitors. The group has developed further over the years, with many artists who found refuge in Upper Franconia at the time being able to establish themselves in the region and have a lasting impact on cultural life. As Bayreuth.de reports, these artists include names like Hanna Barth and Toni Farwick.

A look at the events

In addition to the exhibition, on November 15th there will be the opportunity to take part in a short visit with the art historian Ursula Leibinger-Hasibether. For just 2.50 euros, those interested can immerse themselves in the world of art at 4 p.m. But that's not all: on November 16th, public tours will be offered in Ukrainian, Persian and Chinese. Starting at 11 a.m., Nataliya Yadzhak will lead the Ukrainian tour, while Sara Amiri will present the Persian works of art at 1 p.m. The Chinese leadership with Xuelinzi Liu follows at 3 p.m. And the best part? All tours are free and led by Dr. Beatrice Trost accompanied.

The “Sunday at the Museum” on November 16th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. also offers the opportunity to get creative yourself. Under the guidance of art teacher Ingrid Seidel, participants can try out various painting techniques. Participation here costs a generous 15 euros, which is really a good deal for a creative Sunday. Further details and the entire program can be found on the Kunstmuseum Bayreuth website: Kunstmuseum Bayreuth.

A historical context

Post-World War II art was not just a simple expression of creativity; it also reflected the upheavals in society. Artists often had to struggle with the rubble of the past and had to reorient themselves. As Planet Wissen explains, a variety of styles prevailed in the Federal Republic of Germany that included both abstract elements and informal art. In contrast, art in the GDR was characterized by strict guidelines and socialist realism, which led many artists to seek refuge in the West.

The entire weekend at the Bayreuth Art Museum promises to be not only a feast for the senses, but also an exciting examination of art history and its actors. Take the opportunity to be inspired and perhaps become creative yourself - this can easily be combined with a visit to one of the most charming museums in the region!
