Horst Lichter enjoys Schlenkerla”: A star in the Bamberg beer garden!

The Bavarian flair is alive! Recently, the well-known TV star and chef Horst Lichter made the “Schlenkerla” in Bamberg unsafe. As the presenter of the ZDF program “Bares für Rares”, the 63-year-old and his companions went to the beer garden to end the day with a delicious meal. According to a report by Mercury It didn't take long for the two of them to sit down hungrily in the shade of the chestnut trees and let themselves be pampered with culinary delights. A delicious “crispy Schäuferla” and a fresh salad with chicken landed on the table, which obviously tasted excellent.

Of course, a quick snapshot had to be taken: a waiter captured the moment with a souvenir photo. Although it remains unclear whether the star tried the famous “Schlenkerla” smoked beer, Matthias Trum, the head of the brewery, was somewhat disappointed that he could not meet Lichter in person. To be on the safe side, the two motorcyclists stuck to a “low-alcohol” light beer and forewent the traditionally smoky beer. Trum made a little joke and explained that the smoked beer tasted like a “liquid snack”.

A traditional restaurant with history

The “Schlenkerla” is more than just a restaurant; it is a historic brewery that dates back to the early 15th century. Historically, the place is known for its smoky beer, which rumor has it may have even been invented by fire. However, Matthias Trum, who has run the brewery for six generations, pointed out that in fact all beers were once smoked until the invention of the smokeless oven in 1635 changed the situation. Nowadays only Schlenkerla and Spezial in Bamberg brew in this tradition, which makes the smoky lager a special pleasure.

The famous Aecht Schlenkerla smoked beer is brewed with barley malt and gets its characteristic taste from Beechwood smoking. Served particularly fresh from a wooden barrel, it promises an incomparable taste experience. Despite the modernization, with new varieties such as the smoked wheat beer or a cherry-smoked red beer, the Trum family remains true to the traditions and hopes to one day be able to pass the brewery on to the next generation.

The beer garden – a piece of Bavarian cosiness

Lichter’s visit to “Schlenkerla” illustrates the importance of the beer garden in Bavarian culture, which began in Munich in the 19th century. This relaxed atmosphere, in which you can comfortably enjoy a beer in steins, was originally the result of a royal decree. King Maximilian I banned beer cellars from serving food and drinks, which created the tradition that guests had to bring their own snack.

Thanks to the famous beer garden regulations from 1999, guests are now allowed to enjoy food that they have brought with them, which revitalizes the beer garden business, despite small losses for the innkeepers. The atmosphere is and remains an oasis of well-being and allows people to relax and forget about everyday life while enjoying Bavarian delicacies and cold beer. The tradition and influences have contributed to the fact that beer gardens have emerged all over Germany, always following the Bavarian model.

In this sense, Horst Lichter's visit shows how much this tradition lives and is valued in the heart of Bavaria.
