Comprehensive projects to promote biodiversity and quality of stay will begin on the Heidelsteig in Bamberg in 2025.

Heidelsteig becomes a green oasis: benches and biodiversity projects start!
The Heidelsteig is now becoming a real gem for the population. The starting signal for extensive redesign measures was given on June 13, 2025. The main goal is clear: to promote biodiversity and improve the quality of stay in the green area. How webecho-bamberg.de reported, implementation is being driven forward with a lot of citizen participation. The first visible results can already be seen in the two new, inviting benches, which were created thanks to the collaboration of students from the Heidelsteig Middle School and the Montessori School.
What was particularly pleasing was that the young people got involved themselves: sawing, drilling and screwdriving were part of the program. This meant that they were not only involved in the construction process, but were also challenged creatively. Artful steles on the benches come from workshops designed by the students. The new benches, which were installed at the end of May 2025, now invite residents to linger.
Citizen participation and other projects
The redevelopment process is a community project based on ideas from local residents. Various hands-on construction sites are planned for the summer and fall of 2025. Citizens can take action on June 27th and 28th and July 11th and 12th. Projects such as the “Generation Bank” and the deadwood hedge are on the agenda, which are intended not only to improve the quality of stay but also to promote biodiversity.
A special highlight is the planned “generation bench” made of robinia wood. This will be designed in such a way that it offers space for joint activities for all age groups. In addition, an insect hotel is planned for 2024 in cooperation with the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation in Bavaria, supported by Lebenshilfe Bamberg and the Open Work for the Disabled Bamberg (OBA).
Biodiversity in urban areas
These initiatives are part of the larger context of urban biodiversity, which has increasingly become the focus of urban planning since the 1970s. In a report by the bpb.de It becomes clear that the decline in biodiversity despite legal protection is worrying. Structural densification and energy-saving renovations often lead to the displacement of species and the loss of habitats.
The challenges of urban spaces are not only addressed locally in Bamberg, but also in other cities in Europe. The ReBioClim project, which will run until January 2027, has set itself the task of giving urban streams and rivers a new chance. This is not just about renaturation, but also about increasing climate resilience, as on the website TU Dresden is described.
The importance of various actors, from researchers to local authorities, becomes clear here. The exchange of knowledge and experiences is essential to develop exciting solutions for flora and fauna in our cities. Ultimately, we should all have a good knack for designing our urban living spaces - because this is the only way we can bring biodiversity back to our cities and increase the quality of life for everyone.
