Adventurous hiking tour in the Rhön: celebrate with us!

The Rhön, a true hiking paradise, celebrated the crowning conclusion of the BR hiking tour on June 14, 2025. BR reports that the event was open to all hiking enthusiasts and no registration was required. The varied hike started at 9:00 a.m. at the Rhön Biosphere Center, also known as the “House of the Black Mountains,” in Oberbach.

The route took the participants through the picturesque landscape of the Black Mountains nature reserve, past the Würzburger Haus and the Oberbacher Hütte, back to the biosphere center. In total, the hikers covered a distance of around 19 kilometers, which led through the picturesque Sinntal and over the chapel in Riedenberg with a wonderful view.

The path and its highlights

With a lunch break at the Berghaus Rhön, where a live broadcast from Bayern 1 took place, the hike offered some special highlights. The participants were able to look forward to lots of homemade cakes from the Rhön Klub Oberbach and take home free souvenir photos. The return to Oberbach took place via the basalt path that surrounded the hikers until they finally celebrated the end of the tour with music, snacks and entertainment.

Not to forget the humorous contribution by stand-up comedian Markus Barth and the live broadcast on the Frankenschau aktuell, which brought the event into the living rooms of the viewers. Norbert Steiche from BR Main-Rhön spoke about the advantages of hiking in the Rhön and accompanied the event musically with various music groups.

An important event for nature and homeland awareness

The originally planned celebration at the Kissinger Hütte, which was badly damaged by fire in March, had to be canceled. Instead, a fundraising campaign for reconstruction was launched, supported by the Rhön Club Bad Kissingen.

The extensive network of hiking trails in the Rhön, like Rhön Biosphere Reserve reports, includes numerous premium trails, all of which highlight the beauty of the region. In addition to the well-known HOCHRHÖNER®, which stretches from Bad Kissingen to Bad Salzungen, there are numerous opportunities to experience nature at different levels of difficulty.

Whether for demanding hikers or the whole family – the Rhön offers a variety of experiences. Overall, the region not only counts on committed volunteers from the Rhönklub, but also on a broad network of circular routes and themed trails that expand the hiking offerings. Events like the BR hiking tour make the potential for sustainable tourism visible and increase awareness of the biological diversity of our nature.

Finally, it should be noted that the day in the Rhön was a complete success and the hikers were rewarded not only with great experiences, but also with a deep feeling of connection to nature. And that's what makes hiking in this region so special.
