Markus Feulner: New U23 coach at FC Augsburg – A promising step!
FC Augsburg has hired a new coach for the U23 team, Markus Feulner. Feulner, who looked after the club's U19s last season, will take over responsibility in the Bavarian Regional League from the 2025/26 season. He is the successor to Tobias Strobl, who moved to SC Verl. This is a further step in the consistent promotion of internal talent, a motto that CEO Michael Ströll strongly emphasized.
At 43 years old, Feulner not only brings presence but also experience. He has already played 204 Bundesliga games and was previously a professional at FC Augsburg. He has been working as a coach at the club since 2017, and in recent years he has proven himself in various assistant coaching positions and as head coach of the U16s before taking over the U17s and finally the U19s in 2022. Under his leadership, the U19s finished their Group E in League B of the DFB youth league with flying colors in first place and will even compete in the DFB Junior Cup next season.
Prospects for the U23
FC Augsburg's U23s will take to the pitch for the first time on June 24, 2025 under Feulner's leadership. The coach is grateful for the trust the club has placed in him and is looking forward to the challenge ahead. “I want to integrate the talents that come from the U19 into the U23 and give them the opportunity to develop further,” explains Feulner.
In recent years, the U19 has produced players who have already gained experience in the U23. This creates a natural transition between the youth and men's teams, which not only promotes talent, but also increases the club's sporting success.
Promoting talent in German football
The promotion of young talent is very important in Germany, as the DFB talent development program shows. This program works closely with 339 bases across Germany to specifically train talented players. Every football talent should have the chance to be discovered and promoted, with around 14,000 players of prime learning age receiving screening training every year. It's not just about developing technical skills, but also about comprehensive personal development. Juniors up to U15 and juniors up to U16 in particular benefit from the weekly training program at DFB bases.
By strategically linking club youth work with performance-oriented structures, the pool of strong, technically skilled and creative players is continuously expanded. Such programs are essential to secure the long-term future of German football, while clubs like FC Augsburg continue to pursue their philosophy of internal talent development.
For fans and experts, it remains to be seen what fresh impulses Markus Feulner will provide with his U23 and how he can support the young talents on their way to becoming professionals. One thing is certain: the coming months will be exciting.
