B17 in Augsburg: Construction site chaos ensures traffic jam until June 22nd!
Augsburg, Deutschland - in Augsburg it can be a bit bumpy for commuters at the moment. Construction work has been underway on the B17 since Whit Monday, which strongly influence traffic. Traffic is currently only managed in a single lane and the city informs that the work runs as scheduled. However, this construction site should be completed by June 22, 2025, which gives drivers hope. The road to the south has already been gently overtaken and traffic is now being led over this new trail.
Nevertheless, the construction site ensures plenty of traffic jams, especially during peak times when many commuters are on the road. According to a current traffic analysis from TomTom, drivers needed an average of around three minutes longer towards the north in the morning, while they even had to calculate about eleven minutes towards the south. In the evening, travel times in the southern direction extended up to eight additional minutes, which added up to twelve minutes. This means that some drivers switch to the home office or look for alternative routes to escape traffic.
diversions and current construction measures
The construction work affects the section between the Eichleitnerstraße and Leitershofer Straße junctions, where the whisper asphalt is currently being replaced. This special asphalt type helps to reduce noise loads. It is particularly in demand in areas with high traffic, because the whisper asphalt can reduce the background noise by up to 10 decibels, which corresponds to a reduction of up to 50 percent. In Germany, 10 million people are already affected by street noise - a problem that the cities are working again and again.
In addition, the junctions Gabelsberger Straße and Liefshofer Straße are closed in the direction of Landsberg, but diversions are well signposted. The Nestackerweg and Eichleitnerstrasse junctions, on the other hand, remain accessible. From June 16, not only the southern tracks, but also the northern lane towards the highway will be tackled for the next steps in the construction work - also only with one track per direction.
whispering in detail
The whisper asphalt is not only inexpensive, but also innovative. Its special properties make it particularly suitable for these construction projects. Although it causes three -fold construction costs compared to normal asphalt, it represents an efficient solution for noise and associated residents' complaints. The paved surface has fewer bitumen and coarse grain, which enables sound absorption. This technique, which was used for the first time on airfields in the 1940s, is now being used more and more in road construction.
The last renewals in Augsburg took place in 2016 during the Pentecost holidays. In 2022, the ceiling between Holzweg and the B17-Zubringer Donauwörther Straße was also renewed. Despite the challenges that such extensive construction projects bring with them-in particular the increased use of secondary routes such as the mayor-Ulrich-Straße-those responsible hope for more relaxed traffic as soon as this work is completed.
The situation remains tense, but due to the constantly growing measures to improve the infrastructure, drivers in Augsburg are offered better driving pleasure in the long term. The patience of the commuters will be put to the test in these weeks - but hope for an early relief remains.
