Augsburg celebrates the first veteran day: honor for our heroes!

Augsburg, Deutschland - June 15th in Germany becomes a special day on which veterans of the Bundeswehr are duly recognized. As part of the new national veteran day, the city of Augsburg will draw attention to the importance of the veterans with an official flag on the Rathausplatz. Mayor Eva Weber emphasizes that peace, freedom and security are not a self -image, but are based on the commitment of many members of the armed forces. We owe the initiation of this holiday to a decision by the German Bundestag from April 2024, which is now celebrated for the first time on June 15, 2025. Citizens are invited to actively participate in this day and to find out more about the experiences of the veterans, so augsburg.de.

But why exactly June 15th? On this day in 2019, the veteran badge was awarded for the first time, and the 15th June is not just a date, but a symbol of recognition and appreciation for the approximately ten million veterans who have served since the Bundeswehr was founded. The nationwide central event takes place in Berlin around the Reichstag building and draws attention to the challenges with which many veterans are faced.

challenges and recognition

A big concern of the veteran day is to promote social understanding for the veterans. A particularly large number of soldiers returned their missions with physical or psychological injuries. As in the current report of [RND] (https://www.rnd.de/politik/veteranentag-am-15-juni-veteranen-der-Bundeswehr-krei- fnnuwpjcofd4tchrwr7v5om.html), various political factions are committed to the introduction of a veteran, for gratitude to these emergency to be expressed and at the same time improve aftercare for the employees.

An example of the difficulties with which many veterans are confronted is the situation of Robert Müller, a paratrooper who served in Kosovo and Afghanistan. He suffered a post -traumatic stress disorder (PTBS) after suffering traumatic experiences. The recognition of his illness as a military service damage lasted for years, and Müller reports that help often has to be fought hard. According to the report by [NDR] (https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/info/traumatierte- veteranen-kaempfen-ka-recognition-der-Bundeswehr trauma100.html), the process to recognize military service damage often takes up to 22 months, whereby many veterans are difficult to enforce their demands.

a step in the right direction

The federal government has now been asked to develop a concept for the veteran day. This includes improving rehabilitation measures and the development of childcare concepts. The chairman of the Federation of German operational veterans, Bernhard Drescher, welcomed the cross -party consensus to the introduction of the Veteran Day, but warns that this day must not only be an alibi -like event. "It needs extensive nationwide activities so that it does justice to its importance," says Drescher.

This could make the national veteran day a first step into a more comprehensive veteran policy that meets the matters and needs of the former soldiers and gives them the urgently needed recognition. The city of Augsburg will be a place where this important social debate begins and the stories of the veterans are heard.
