Shocking moment in the Ansbach district: Pedelec driver (76) seriously injured in an accident

On Sunday, June 22, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred in the Ansbach district that left the local community in suspense. At around 4:45 p.m. there was a serious collision between a Pedelec and a Ford Focus at the intersection between the district road AN 47 and the district road AN 60. A 76-year-old driver of the electric bicycle, who was riding without a helmet, apparently ignored the traffic sign “Give way” and collided head-on with the car that was being driven by a 39-year-old man who was traveling with his family.

The impact was violent: the Pedelec driver was thrown over the car in such a way that he hit the hood and windshield. As a result, the 76-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries and was immediately flown to a clinic in Nuremberg in a rescue helicopter. An expert and the police officers ensured that both the Pedelec and the car were seized for further examination.

Consequences for the inmates

In addition to the driver, his 40-year-old wife and three children aged 2, 12 and 19 were in the Ford Focus. While the driver himself only suffered bruises and abrasions, his wife was unconscious and also had injuries. The children are in shock and were looked after on site by a crisis intervention team. The community is shocked by this incident and many residents are wondering how such tragic accidents can be avoided.

According to calculations by the Federal Ministry of Transport Senior-friendly traffic safety concepts are indispensable. In 2023, over 59% of cyclists and pedestrians who were fatally injured were over 65 years old, which particularly highlights the risk to older road users. Factors such as greater vulnerability and cognitive changes with age make seniors vulnerable road users who are more dependent on safety precautions.

Important road safety measures

The tragedy underscores the need to educate seniors about possible dangers and preventive measures. Initiatives by the German traffic watchdog are, for example, dedicated to training in the safe use of Pedelecs and the wearing of helmets. The “Fit by Bike” program also aims to improve older people’s motor skills and thus make them safer on the road.

It is also essential to make younger road users aware of the risks and show them how important it is to be considerate in road traffic. The campaign "I feel young. I just need longer" calls for paying attention to older citizens and taking their needs into account on the road, offering some kind of support where it is needed.
