New illustrated book shows Amberg’s story through the lens of the Paulus family”

There is reason to be happy in Amberg: The new illustrated book “Amberg – a moving picture journey into the 20s to 80s” will delight not only history buffs, but also everyone who would like to take a look back into the city’s past. The impressive photos, which show a selection from the estate of the Paulus photography dynasty, come from the archives of the Amberg city archives. How Central Bavarian reports, the book was created by a happy coincidence when Michaela Fichtner gave the Amberg city archives 3,500 slides and paper images from the period between 1920 and 1980. Then Dr. Andreas Erb, the head of the city archives, to Dieter Dörner to put together an illustrated book with around 150 images.

With two generations of the Paulus family of photographers, the illustrated book looks at the tradition of photographic heritage. Max Paulus senior, a pioneer of photography in the region, was a co-founder of the Amberg Photographic Society and left behind a rich body of work with over 300 exhibitions worldwide. His son, Max Paulus Jr., followed in his father's footsteps and is also known for his outstanding photographic work. Together they received almost 50 medals and awards for their art.

The illustrated book as a journey through time

The book, which consists of 160 pages, is divided into four chapters: “Amberg, the strongest princely city”, “The old town of Amberg”, “Life in Amberg” and “Maria Hilf”. This also includes introductory chapter descriptions and a short biography of both photographers. The selection and digitization of the images posed an exciting challenge for Dieter Dörner, and now readers can immerse themselves in the highlights of her life's work. The illustrated book is available for 24.99 euros in the city archives and in bookstores.

In addition, the exhibition "Six Eyes. Three Generations of Photography" in the Burglengenfeld Folklore Museum and in the Amberg-Sulzbach District Office shows the diverse creative power of the family history of the Paulus photographers.

A look at the neighbors

Similarly, enthusiasts in Wels are offered a new publication. The Wels city archive recently attracted attention with the illustrated book “A Retrospective Journey,” which shows a selection of historical motifs from the 1950s to the 1990s. How Wels Report notes, this illustrated volume is another part of the archive's many years of work and is aimed at both older and younger Welsers. The illustrated book costs 16.99 euros and is also available in local bookstores.

Through their city archives, both cities show how important it is to preserve and make history accessible. Amberg and Wels offer fascinating insights into their development and the everyday stories of the people who live there. This means you can not only browse through the past, but also discover the present from a new perspective.
