New construction of the high-voltage line: A step towards the energy transition in Bavaria

In Bavaria, important decisions are currently being made in the area of electricity supply. The government of Upper Bavaria has just done that Plan approval procedure opened for the construction of a new high-voltage line. TenneT TSO GmbH and Bayernwerk Netz GmbH are the applicants. A new 380 kV line section is planned, which will run around 24 kilometers between Tann in the Rottal-Inn district and Pirach in the Altötting district.

The main goal of this measure? Securing the power supply in the Bavarian Chemical Triangle and adapting to the requirements of the energy transition. The new line will replace the existing 220 kV line between Pirach and Tann/Zeilarn. It is interesting that the route begins at the Pirach substation and ends in the municipal triangle of Tann, Wurmannsquick and Zeilarn.

Route management and public participation

The planned route will touch some communities, including Burgkirchen an der Alz, Mehring, Emmerting, Marktl, Neuötting, Erlbach, Wurmannsquick and Zeilarn.

What is particularly noteworthy is that an existing 110 kV line from Bayernwerk Netz GmbH is carried along an approximately 8 kilometer long section between Pirach and Burghausen. The planning documents can be viewed on the Upper Bavaria government website from June 24, 2025, and to anyone interested: The deadline for objections is up to and including August 6, 2025.

What happens next? During the planning approval procedure comprehensive public participation is ensured. Public stakeholders, i.e. municipalities, districts as well as interest groups and environmental protection organizations, have the opportunity to comment on the planning. This also includes the place and period of public display being announced in the official gazette of the affected municipalities.

The path to the final decision

The process is concluded with a planning approval decision that determines the final route. The planning approval authority will carefully examine and weigh up the objections submitted. This important decision ensures that, in addition to public, municipal and private concerns are taken into account. For anyone who wants to stay informed as quickly as possible, it is advisable to follow the relevant information regularly.

Another example of current developments in the area of high voltage is the application by Bayernwerk Netz GmbH to increase the power and renovate the 110 kV overhead line Bamberg/South – Bamberg/North. This measure also takes place as part of a planning approval procedure and shows how dynamic planning in the area of energy infrastructure is progressing. Here, too, there is extensive participation by the public and those responsible for public affairs.

The developments surrounding high-voltage lines impressively show how important it is to secure the energy supply in the face of the energy transition. It will be exciting to see how the planning progresses and what objections may be submitted in the coming weeks.
