Red benches in Aichach: signs against domestic violence are flourishing

In Aichach, a strong signal is being sent against domestic violence: two striking red benches were inaugurated in front of the district office and the family support center. This engagement took place as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is celebrated on November 25th. donaukurier.de reports that these benches represent an initiative by the Aichach-Friedberg district that draws attention to domestic violence and promotes civil courage.

The idea of the “Red Bank”, which originally came from Italy, quickly spread across borders. In the Aichach family base, supported by the women's network Club Therese, the desire arose to make this important topic more visible. The realization was achieved through Julia Baur's committed fundraising efforts and the support of the district, while the Equal Opportunities Office was involved in the implementation, particularly in cooperation with the Caritas day care center for mental health.

Symbol of solidarity and help

The benches were lovingly manufactured by hand by a small team led by Ralf Dippel. This red bench should not only symbolize attention and solidarity, but also provide concrete help. It is equipped with a sign that provides information about the nationwide “Violence Against Women” helpline. In addition, a QR code on the sign leads to further support offers.

In the benches themselves there is a compartment with flyers that provide important information about offers of help. The aim is to offer those affected a low-threshold source of information, as many often do not know where they can find help. The telephone number for the helpline, which can be reached anonymously and free of charge around the clock, is 08000/11 60 16.

A look at social reality

Domestic violence is a pervasive problem that affects women in all social classes. According to a study published by bmbfsfj.bund.de, every third woman in Germany is a victim of physical and/or sexual violence at least once in her life. Especially in the context of recent initiatives to combat violence against women, it is important to reflect on the deeply anchored patriarchal structures that promote these violent relationships.

The UN campaign “Orange the World”, which has been active since 1991, also aims to raise public awareness of violence against women and girls. This campaign runs from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women until December 10, Human Rights Day. This connection shows that the issue of women and violence is of great importance not only locally, but also globally. [mdr.de].

Overall, the initiatives in Aichach and beyond show that society is increasingly dealing with the challenges and effects of domestic violence. It remains to be hoped that the Red Benches in Aichach will initiate a broad discussion and help those affected to take the first step out of isolation.
