Wunsiedel fights against dementia: Successful screening in a multi-generational home

The city of Wunsiedel is actively tackling the challenges of dementia. On October 15, 2025, a screening offer for older citizens took place in the multi-generational house, which was organized in collaboration with the digiDEM project at the University of Erlangen. First Mayor Nicolas Lahovnik was personally involved in the event, which aims to support those affected and their families. Again Wiesentbote reported, the screening was aimed at people aged 63 and over who either experience memory problems themselves or whose relatives have noticed a deterioration in mental performance.

A total of 18 participants took advantage of the screening, where they were tested individually by project assistant Ottilie Ochs. The tests lasted approximately 20 minutes and participants were invited to be retested regularly. This offer was well received by citizens, which not only underlines the importance of such actions, but also points to the need for more educational work about dementia. The commitment of the Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care, which is supporting the project, shows how seriously the situation is being taken.

Background to digiDEM Bavaria

The screening is part of the broader DigiDEM Bayern project, which has been running since January 2019 and is supported with funding of 6.2 million euros from the Bayern Digital II master plan. Loud izph.fau.de The project aims to sustainably improve the diagnosis and care of people with dementia and their caring relatives in Bavaria. Supply structures face major challenges, particularly in rural areas.

A central aspect of the digiDEM project is the provision of digital offerings that make it easier for those affected, relatives and volunteers to find support. This coverage gap in care is to be closed by setting up a digital dementia register that collects long-term data on treatment and support in all administrative districts in Bavaria.

Commitment and outlook

The response to the screening campaigns has been consistently positive. Participants feel that the offer is taken seriously and they receive valuable information that can potentially significantly improve their quality of life. These initiatives not only draw attention to the current care situation, but also appeal to society to actively address the issue of dementia. The great commitment of those involved, such as the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Erlangen University Hospital, shows that they have a good knack for tackling the challenges in caring for people with dementia.
