Würzburg is putting an end to fossil fuels: renovation plans for 2025!

Würzburg is well on its way to becoming climate neutral in the coming years. An ambitious one Renovation roadmap was recently created to promote the use of heat pumps and photovoltaic systems in public buildings. The goal is to make the city administration climate-neutral by 2028 and the entire city by 2040. To achieve this, the plan focuses primarily on reducing CO2 emissions and reducing energy costs through the renovation of existing public buildings.

In this context, the consulting company Drees & Sommer SE has drawn up a detailed roadmap for 20 public buildings in Würzburg. The plan includes about 200 recommended actions and proposes a phased approach over 20 years, starting with the most energy-intensive buildings. Many of these buildings date from the 1960s and 1970s and have low energy efficiency. This makes the planned measures all the more important, which, in addition to the installation of photovoltaic systems, also include battery storage and green roofs and facades.

Investments and savings

The investment costs for the renovation of these 20 buildings amount to around 33 million euros. Annual savings of around 1 million euros in operating costs can be achieved. The project's payback period is estimated to be approximately 33 years. When asked about financial feasibility, Moritz Decker from Drees & Sommer emphasizes the need for greater support from the federal and state governments, especially since the renovation rate is currently less than 1 percent. Various subsidies, including tax incentives, can be a decisive factor here.

The concept of the “capacity-optimized timetable” takes into account not only the condition of the individual buildings, but also the city’s financial and human resources capacities. The identified “quick wins” that enable short-term savings with minimal effort are also exciting. The planning approach shows once again that Würzburg is able to shape the future with a good hand, even if the path there brings with it many challenges.

The next steps

With this renovation roadmap, Würzburg is well positioned to achieve the climate goals it has set. The implementation will certainly be an important step in the right direction, both for the environment and for the city's finances. By relying on modern technologies such as heat pumps and photovoltaic systems, Würzburg shows that it is possible to promote sustainable urban development and at the same time lighten the burden on your wallet.

Citizens can look forward to seeing what progress will be made in the coming years and how these measures will affect the quality of life in Würzburg. One thing is certain: planning is being done with foresight and the necessary steps towards climate protection are being taken.
