New era for the Rita sisters: Sister Angela Zehe at the top!

On June 18, 2025, the Order of the Rita Sisters can look forward to a breath of fresh air. Sister Angela Zehe was elected as the new Superior General. The decision came during the General Chapter of the Augustinian Order, where the sisters met to discuss the future of their community. Sister Angela not only brings with her many years of experience, but has also served in recent years as deputy to the outgoing Superior General, Sister Rita-Maria Käß. She has been in the leadership position since 2006 and leaves big shoes to fill.

Originally from Grettstadt near Schweinfurt, Angela Zehe joined the order as a novice in 1984 and made her profession for life in 1992. For the last six years she has worked as Vicar to the Superior General and has shaped the Benedictine Recollectiohaus in Münsterschwarzach by supporting many people in her spiritual accompaniment. She will take on the new tasks from August 28th, St. Augustine's memorial day.

A new era for the Rita sisters

With Sister Angela Zehe at the helm, the religious community expects change. Her successor as vicar will be Sister Anna-Maria Kempf, who was previously the order's economist. In addition, Sister Teresa Reulbach and Sister Inge Grehn were elected as assistants on the board. The Sisters of Rita themselves are a religious order closely linked to St. Rita of Cascia, known as the patroness of “impossible causes.” A deep trust in the power of prayer and forgiveness is what inspires and guides the sisters.

Saint Rita, born in Umbria in 1381, led an eventful life that made her an Augustinian nun. She wanted to join the order as a young woman, but was married against her will. After the murder of her husband and the deaths of her two sons, Rita chose to live a life of penance in an Augustinian monastery in Cascia. Her memorial day, May 22nd, commemorates not only her death, but also her work in the world of people with difficult life situations.

Rita Sisters: Tradition and Future

The Rita Sisters community was founded in Würzburg in 1911, originally as a nursing association for poor families. Over the years, the focus changed to spiritual guidance and a variety of social services. The women of the community live and work not only in Germany; They also have branches in Königshofen and Racine in the USA. There they also provide help and carry the name of their patroness out into the world.

With this new leadership and Sister Angela's fresh ideas, the community is well equipped to continue to support people in difficult situations and to carry on St. Rita's legacy. This renewal is not only a sign for the sisters, but a sign of hope for all those who seek support and comfort.

The sisters are proud to carry on the tradition of St. Rita and firmly believe in the power of her intercession. This new time will continue to be characterized by belief in the impossible, in keeping with the spirit of its patroness. For their community and for everyone who counts on their help, this is a new phase full of prospects.
