No new asylum seekers since January: District facing major challenges!

In the last few months there has been a remarkable turnaround in the area of asylum and refugees in the Weilheim-Schongau district. There has been no increase in asylum seekers since January 2025, which represents a significant change compared to the previous year. In the first five months of 2024, 200 asylum seekers and 180 Ukrainians were registered in the district, while in the same period in 2025 there were only 136 Ukrainians and no new asylum seekers Mercury reported.

There are currently 3,574 refugees living in the district, including many from Afghanistan, Turkey, Nigeria and many other countries. Despite this stable total number of refugees, the situation in the existing accommodation is tense. The district has 232 free places in the accommodation, while at the same time 15 emergency accommodation in communities such as Wielenbach and Penzberg are to be closed. For a permanent solution, around 400 places in permanent accommodation are expected to be required in order to abolish the interim solutions.

New accommodations under construction

In order to meet the ongoing need for accommodation, new accommodation is being planned on Leprosenweg in Weilheim and Hohenpeißenberg. However, these projects are not financed from the district budget. Instead, we are waiting for cost commitments from the Free State, which have been waiting since the end of 2024. The pressure to create adequate housing options is growing, as currently only 1,163 of the 3,547 refugees are recognized, while 193 are tolerated.

The Asylum Contact Point in the district offers support for refugees and advises them on issues relating to foreigners and asylum. The tasks also include organizing information events and networking with volunteer groups, such as on the District office website is to be read. This enables refugees to integrate better and receive important information.

Forecasts and challenges

The forecasts for the development of escapes are uncertain. An allocation quota of 380 refugees per year is currently expected, but the general conditions are difficult due to the geopolitical situation. While returns have already taken place - four deportations have been carried out this year - it remains to be seen how the situation will develop further. The focus is on politically persecuted people seeking asylum under Article 16a of the Basic Law, while Ukrainians receive citizen's benefit and are therefore not subject to regular asylum seeker benefits.

Statistics show that Germany recorded around 352,000 asylum applications in 2023, the highest number since 2016. The challenges in the European asylum system are diverse and lead to tensions between member states in the EU, particularly with regard to the distribution of refugees from crisis areas, such as Statista shows.

The situation in the district remains tense. It remains to be hoped that both the necessary finances and the political framework will soon be improved in order to offer the refugees a safe and acceptable home.
