Shocking figures: Blood donations are in danger of drying up – act now!
World Blood Donor Day will be celebrated on June 14, 2025, a day dedicated to blood donors who make an invaluable contribution to medical care in Germany. Tomorrow, numerous institutions will be calling on people to take part in blood donation appointments and thus make a contribution to saving patients. This is even more urgent as demographic changes in society continue to lead to declining donor numbers, particularly among younger age groups. Georg Götz, chairman of the DRK/BRK blood donation services, appeals to the population to donate more sustainably and across generations in order to ensure security of supply, because the pressure on blood supplies remains constantly high. oberpfalzecho.de reports that over 3.16 million people attended 40,696 blood donation appointments in 2024.
The numbers make it clear: around 100,000 donors fail each year, which makes the situation even more dire. Martin Oesterer from the German Red Cross explains that Germany has a particular challenge as both the number of hospital treatments and the proportion of patients over 65 are increasing, leading to an increased need for blood. Unfortunately, the trend shows that only around 3 percent of the population wants to donate regularly, which seriously endangers the solidarity-based blood donation system. Without increased commitment from the population, the supply of vital preparations made from donor blood could be at risk. Information about this is available at pharmazeutische-zeitung.de.
Donate blood at any time of the year
The need for blood donations is necessary all year round. However, the number of donors traditionally falls sharply in the summer months, often due to holiday periods and heat waves bargteheideaktuell.de determines. Especially at this time, the population is called upon to actively participate in blood donations and to provide the urgently needed blood preparations.
The next blood donation dates in the Weiden area have already been set. Anyone interested can donate on June 17th in Windischeschenbach from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the multi-purpose hall. There are also numerous options available in Weiden itself: on June 23rd from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on June 24th from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Max Reger Hall. On June 26th we continue to the Ludwig Meier Elementary School in Etzenricht, also from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. It is recommended to register for dates in advance to best plan capacity, and larger groups can also be accommodated through block bookings.
In order to donate blood, donors must be at least 18 years old, weigh 50 kilograms and present an official photo ID and, if applicable, a blood donor card. In doing so, they provide a valuable service to the community and ensure that the clinics are well equipped 365 days a year.
