Cycle paths in the Unterallgäu: District further invests in the future

In the district of Unterallgäu, something is happening in the field of bicycle infrastructure. The district committee recently spoke out to expand the existing Radwegenetz and gaps. Cycling is a wonderful way to get environmentally friendly, cheap and quick from A to B, especially when you shorter distances up to five kilometers. According to the Environmental Bundesamt it is also an excellent means of promoting your own health.

The district has been promoting the expansion of bike paths since 1997 and has created 26 cycle path axles since then. Together, these form an local cycle path network that is particularly important for the region. The district committee has now decided to continue the co -financing by the district, although legal uncertainties and high costs continue to be a challenge.

Investment program for cycle paths

The existing investment program already dates from 1997 and comprises a total of 24 touring axes. Overall, the cycle path network in Unterallgäu extends over around 1100 kilometers and currently offers 46 designated bike tours. This expansion is not only crucial for the health sector, but also an important contribution to domestic tourism.

In the current discussion, numerous aspects were emphasized, from security considerations to the positive environmental and health effects of cycling. Especially with regard to the advancing climate goals, bicycle traffic should be promoted increasingly, because over 40 % of the car rides in major German cities are shorter than 5 kilometers - here the bike could shine as a quick means of transport. The possibility of moving part of this route to the bike could also make a big difference in the Unterallgäu.

planned projects

Aktuell the municipality is planning to create two new bike paths to close existing gaps in the cycle path network. This is a 680-meter-long cycle and sidewalk between Lachen and Moosbach east of the district road MN 16 and another bike path of around 630 meters between Lachen and Albishofen on an existing bosses. The total costs amount to around 790,000 euros, with the Free State covering 70 to 80 percent of the project costs. This means that costs remain in the amount of 150,000 to 230,000 euros.

However, whether the municipality can cover these costs without the district's participation remains questionable. This topic is not only more relevant in the Unterallgäu, but also nationwide, since it is not only about personal comfort, but also about the quality of life in our region.

The promotion of cycling is therefore a very current and exciting topic that could further advance the district of Unterallgäu. Information about the cycle path network can be found on
