Shock call in Bogen: Fraudsters arrested – How to protect yourself!

On Friday, July 11, 2025, a suspected fraudster who was involved in a brazen shock call was arrested in Bogen (Straubing-Bogen district). A 52-year-old woman received a call from a perpetrator posing as a prosecutor and claiming that her daughter had caused an accident. A deposit of 42,000 euros must be paid for the daughter to be released. However, the woman saw through the fraud and informed the police at the same time. In similar cases, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) warns of shock calls in which fraudsters pose as relatives or government employees in order to force quick financial action. The caller put pressure on the woman to hand over the money in Pilsting.

Arrest of the suspect

Police officers discovered a suspicious man in a taxi traveling on the A92 towards Munich around 5:50 p.m. The taxi was stopped at the Mettenbacher Moos parking lot at around 6:20 p.m. and the 25-year-old Serb was arrested. He is suspected of being a cash collector for a commercial fraud gang. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued against him and the man was taken to a correctional facility.

This incident highlights the increasing problem of shock calls, which pose a serious risk to many citizens not only in Bavaria but nationwide. According to the BKA, fraudsters often pose as close relatives and put victims under pressure in order to force high bail payments.

How do you protect yourself?

The BKA gives valuable tips on how citizens can protect themselves from such criminal activities:

  • Folgen Sie nicht den Aufforderungen der Anrufer und legen Sie auf.
  • Geben Sie keine persönlichen oder finanziellen Details am Telefon preis.
  • Rufen Sie Angehörige unter bekannten Nummern an, um zu überprüfen, ob die Situation echt ist.
  • Im Zweifel: Kontaktieren Sie sofort die örtliche Polizeidienststelle.
  • Lassen Sie keine Unbekannten in Ihre Wohnung.

The scammers' approach is reminiscent of a well-orchestrated play, often involving multiple callers to put further pressure on the victim. During the handover of the money, the victims are again influenced, increasing the risk that they will act rashly. The BKA warns of amounts that can range from a few thousand to 100,000 euros.

In the case in Bogen, courageous citizens and the quick reaction of the police led to an arrest. This shows how important it is to be vigilant. Anyone who receives a shock call should follow the authorities' recommendations and act immediately.

Further information on prevention can be found on the Police Crime Prevention website and at the BKA. Be careful and don't be caught off guard!
