Starnberg celebrates Ignaz Günther: Cheers to the Rococo master!

Ignaz Günther's 300th birthday is being duly celebrated in Starnberg. Born on November 22, 1725 in Altmannstein, the artist is considered one of the most outstanding sculptors of the Bavarian Rococo. On the day of the honor, the city will commemorate his work with guided tours and a special themed evening. The events are a wonderful opportunity to put the life's work of this master of sculpture in the right light.

Starnberg can boast of having two of his most important works: the “Starnberg Saints” and the high altar in the Church of St. Josef, both of which impressively embody the artistic legacy of Ignaz Günther. Dr. Claudia Wagner will offer a special tour on November 22nd at 3 p.m., which will take place in cooperation with the Starnberger See Museum. The participation fee is 10 euros, plus entry to the museum.

A special event: The Ignaz Günther evening

On the eve of the big birthday, November 21st, an Ignaz Günther evening entitled “His Family Tells” will take place in the Starnberger See Museum. Verena Fincke, who is considered a direct descendant of the Günther family, will take part in this evening and give exciting insights into the family history. Interestingly, she is related to the sculptor for seven generations; her great-great-great-grandfather was Ignaz Günther's half-brother. Verena Fincke has lived near St. Josef Church for 33 years and has a passion for everything that has to do with Ignaz Günther.

Tickets for this special evening cost 23 euros, reduced price 10 euros. The evening begins at 7 p.m. and promises to be an impressive experience that focuses on the art and life of this extraordinary sculptor.

A look into the past

Ignaz Günther's career was shaped by his career. He learned his craft in his father's carpentry shop and was a student of the well-known sculptor Johann Baptist Straub. After his training, he went traveling, where he worked in Salzburg and Mannheim, among other places. In 1754 he settled in Munich, where he founded his own workshop after being recognized as a court-exempt sculptor.

Ignaz Günther was not only a talented artist, but also a family man - he had nine children with his wife Maria Magdalena Hollmayr. Many of his works have stood the test of time, although some have been lost due to wars and other circumstances. His most famous works include altars and church furnishings, which can still be admired in many churches in Bavaria today.

Of course, today there are new ways to express creativity. Technologies like Rokoko Vision make it possible to capture movements in 3D and quickly animate characters. These tools support both beginners and experienced studio animators who can explore a new dimension of art today.

An exciting weekend is just around the corner in Starnberg that not only celebrates the story of Ignaz Günther, but also enriches the joy of art and culture in the region. If you want to find out more about the impressive sculptor, you shouldn't miss out on what the city has to offer!
