Brutal animal cruelty on Lake Starnberg: mother duck dies after being thrown a stone!
A brutal incident caused a stir on July 2nd at Lake Starnberg, not far from the Nepomuk Bridge. A woman who was observed by several students attacked a mother duck so badly that she died a few minutes later. Witnesses report that she deliberately threw stones at the mother duck, who was traveling with her seven ducklings at the time. This not only represented unforgivable animal cruelty, but also heated up the tempers of those present, especially a group of six schoolgirls from Munich who saw the incident with their own eyes and immediately informed the animal protection association.
The horrifying details of the incident were published by Merkur. The perpetrator, described as having blonde hair in a bun, a black bikini and a blue cover-up, left the injured mother duck behind after hitting her in the neck. Despite the immediate help of the students who pulled the seriously injured mother duck out of the water, nothing more could be done; she died a few minutes later. Although the chicks have a chance of independent survival, they made it clear how important it is to protect such animals.
A committed animal protection
Anton Dreher, owner of the Rambeck shipyard, was horrified by the incident and has offered a reward of 2,000 euros for information about the perpetrator. Dreher has been active in animal protection for years and takes care of the needs of the ducks on Lake Starnberg by providing breeding boxes and climbing aids. As a result of his commitment, animal protection is a top priority in the region, but the need for further protective measures is now clearer than ever.
In addition to the current situation, a report from Süddeutsche shows that there were a total of 1,031 registered crimes in Bavaria in 2024 that were recorded due to violations of the Animal Welfare Act. This is almost three cases per day! Animal welfare violations appear to be a worrying issue that is coming to light with increasing frequency. Experts also see a significant number of unreported cases because many violations are not recorded.
The role of the public
The police have now filed a complaint against unknown persons and are looking for other witnesses to the incident. Residents and passers-by are asked to call (08151) 3640 if they have seen anything.
These incidents highlight the need for more sensitive treatment of animals in society. While the numbers in animal protection statistics have remained almost constant, representatives of the Animal Protection Association in Bavaria also want harsher penalties for animal cruelty. The Animal Welfare Association agrees that more attention needs to be paid to the protection needs of animals in order to prevent such frightening incidents.
Starnberg is not only in focus as a beautiful place on the lake, but also as a place where the issue of animal protection urgently and blatantly needs to be brought to the fore. The shocking act will certainly not only affect animal lovers in the region, but will also trigger a broader discussion about the treatment of animals and their protection needs.
The commitment of the population and cooperation with the authorities are crucial to improving animal welfare in the future. Only together can we succeed in giving animals a safe life and protecting them from cruel treatment, which unfortunately still occurs in cases like this today.
