Power outage in Lower Franconia: 30,000 households affected!
A significant power outage disrupted over 30,000 households in Lower Franconia on Wednesday. The Schweinfurt and Kitzingen districts were particularly affected, where the outage began at 10:41 a.m. and lasted for more than an hour and a half. Power had been restored to most homes by midday, but some areas were without power for extended periods. In Füttersee, a district of Geiselwind, the restoration took the longest, as BR24 reports.
The cause of the massive power outage was a technical defect in the Brünnstadt substation. More specifically, a malfunction in the control cabinet led to an arc on a circuit breaker, which triggered a short circuit on a high-voltage line at Bayernwerk. This resulted in the 110 kV line being automatically switched off as a protective mechanism to prevent major damage. The downed line is important because it normally transports electricity to smaller distribution centers, as the Mainfranken News confirms.
Disturbance measures and restoration
The network control center at ÜZ Mainfranken immediately initiated troubleshooting measures. The specialists coordinated these carefully in order to quickly locate the cause of the disruption and restore power to the affected households. The work in Brünnstadt went smoothly with close communication between the network operators. By 12 p.m., all affected areas were back online, with other substations also called in to provide support.
In total, around 600 transformer stations at ÜZ Mainfranken were affected, which supplies over 125,000 people in the region with energy. The energy supply cooperative, which has focused on sustainability and regional value creation for over 30 years, also uses social media such as Instagram and Facebook in such crisis situations to continuously inform its customers about the status of things.
ÜZ Mainfranken is not only the largest energy supply cooperative in Bavaria, it also has climate protection goals that it already achieved in 2016. Their commitment includes, among other things, fiber optic expansion and the development of climate-neutral heating solutions as well as electromobility.
