Schwandorf cycles for climate protection: 79,112 kilometers for a green future!
A great success for Schwandorf: On Monday, July 10, 2025, the final event of CITY CYCLING took place in the idyllic Spitalgarten. The event celebrated the city's participation in this nationwide competition, which encourages people to use cycling as an environmentally friendly means of transport. This was Schwandorf's fifth participation in the campaign, which was launched by the Climate Alliance and aims to experience the benefits of cycling in everyday life and to set an example for the importance of good cycling infrastructure.
In total, an impressive 79,112 kilometers were cycled during the campaign period from May 19 to June 8, 2025, which corresponds to a saving of around 13 tons of CO₂. With 317 cyclists spread across 24 teams, Schwandorf impressively demonstrated how committed the population is when it comes to climate-friendly mobility.
Successful participants and team rankings
Honoring the most successful participants provided additional joy. For the women, Roswitha Stangl from the Schwandorf district office took first place with an incredible 2,178.9 km. She was followed by Christine Schwarz from St. Barbara Hospital with 1,083.6 km and Kerstin Hein, also from the hospital, with 833.8 km.
Among the men, Johann Hochholzer from the “Canyon Racers” team was the strongest rider and cycled 2,228.0 km. Peter Wein (RKB Solidarity Klardorf) and Horst Schmid (RKB Solidarity Klardorf) came in second and third place with 1,267.0 km and 1,128.1 km. The first place winners received vouchers from Intersport Meier, backpacks and bicycle bells. The team ranking was also impressive. The RKB Solidarity Klardorf team won with 21,503 km, followed by the St. Barbara Hospital with 18,034 km and the Schwandorf District Office with 11,301 km. The prices for the teams were also attractive: vouchers from local inns and ice cream parlors demonstrated regional support and appreciation.
Endorsement by the city administration
In his speech, Mayor Andreas Feller emphasized the importance of commitment to climate-friendly mobility and thanked all participants for their commitment. “Together we show that we can rely on bicycles as part of a sustainable transport infrastructure,” says Feller. The mayor invited everyone to take part in CITY CYCLING 2026 again, as the city of Schwandorf is determined to continue to put this important topic on the agenda.
The CITY CYCLING competition, which is held internationally, has proven over the years to be an effective way to convince people to cycle and to combine everyday commutes with bicycles. According to Umweltbundesamt, around 300,000 people from almost 900 municipalities now take part and cycle over 60 million kilometers every year. This underlines the need for a well-thought-out cycling infrastructure and shows how much joy and activity can be found in cycling.
All in all, the event was a successful conclusion to a competition that not only focuses on climate protection, but also strengthens the sense of community in Schwandorf. The day ended with a cozy get-together and looked optimistically into the future.
