Blood donations in Bavaria: Health Minister warns of dramatic decline!

Did you know that around 2,000 blood units are needed every day in Bavaria? This immense need not only calls on the Bavarian Red Cross, but also calls on the entire population to take action. Health Minister Judith Gerlach emphasizes the urgency of the situation and warmly asks people to donate blood or plasma on World Blood Donor Day. The willingness to donate could decrease, especially in the coming summer months, as many citizens travel on vacation.

Although around 90 percent of Bavarians rate the importance of blood donations, only around five percent of those able to donate donate regularly. Although this number is above the national average of three percent, current developments are worrying. According to the Bavarian Red Cross, the number of new blood donors is declining, which could jeopardize the availability of urgently needed blood products. In 2023, almost 50,000 people appeared as donors for the first time, while in the follow-up year 2024 there were only a good 45,000. This makes it clear that the Bavarian willingness to donate blood is balancing on “thin ice”, as managing director Georg Götz warns.

The importance of blood donation

The around 250,000 active blood donors in Bavaria every year supply more than 13.4 million people in the Free State with vital blood products. It is alarming that one blood donation can save up to three lives. Patients with cancer, heart disease and stomach and intestinal diseases in particular depend on these blood donations. The need for blood preparations is not only high, but also time-critical, as many of them only have a shelf life of a few days.

Dependence on a comparatively small group of people is a problem. Despite the great human willingness, relatively few people actually donate. According to estimates, this tendency could have something to do with the fact that many people are not sufficiently aware of how important their contribution is and what positive effects it has. The German Red Cross regularly offers educational campaigns to increase awareness of blood donation.

Call for donations

Another point that should not go unnoticed: Blood donations can be made by all healthy individuals aged 18 and over, with the highest current limits being four donations per year for women and six donations per year for men. But what are the little hurdles that stop many people from donating? Holiday seasons, flu waves and even the weather influence the willingness to donate. It is therefore important that we address these challenges together and build a strong foundation of blood donors.

So if you are traveling in the Free State and are thinking about doing something good, you should stop by for a blood donation campaign in the near future. Your small gesture could save the lives of several people. Take advantage of the opportunity and be part of this crucial community. Because today blood donors are the heroes of everyday life - and everyone can be one of them!
