Construction work on the Rottal Railway: Traffic chaos between Passau and Pfarrkirchen!

In the Rottal region, an extensive modernization of the railway line between Pfarrkirchen and Passau is pending. According to deutschebahn.com construction work will begin on October 3rd and last until November 23rd 2025. With an investment of around 25 million euros, the infrastructure will be significantly renewed in order to make rail operations future-proof.

As part of this project, there are numerous measures at various train stations in the area. In Pocking, all tracks will be completely renewed and six switches will be replaced. The mechanical signal box from 1937 will also be replaced by a modern electronic signal box. Bad Birnbach will receive an extension of the existing tracks and a new signal box, while in Fürstenzell two switches will be replaced and a large railway bridge will be renovated.

Rail traffic severely restricted

The construction work entails significant restrictions on train traffic. According to pnp.de, train traffic between Passau and Pfarrkirchen is not possible. Travelers will have to prepare for replacement bus services during the construction period. The Südostbayernbahn asks passengers to take adjusted travel times into account. Information about timetable changes and replacement stops can be accessed via the DB Navigator or the Südostbayernbahn website.

In addition, fundamental renovations to the safety technology will be carried out at nine level crossings. These measures are part of a comprehensive plan that also includes cable work and the construction of signal foundations. The aim is to increase safety and prepare the route for digital rail operations.

Long-term improvements for the region

Deutsche Bahn is also busy modernizing the signal box technology on the Munich-Mühldorf route, which will also lead to route closures. Restrictions are expected on certain weekends and evenings, particularly between mid-January and the end of June and from mid-September to mid-December. The route from Mühldorf to Munich will remain completely closed during the summer holidays.

These measures, which will last until 2027, are intended to replace the last mechanical signal boxes in the region with modern electronic signal boxes. Railway safety will also be further improved with the installation of over 80 new light and shape signals.

The Südostbayernbahn would like to thank the passengers and residents for their understanding during the construction work and invites anyone interested to contact customer dialogue with questions: telephone 08631 / 609 333 or email sob-kundendialog@deutschebahn.com.
