On June 15, 2025, the rescue dog squadron of the fire brigade Lüdenscheid provided exciting moments when visiting the group "From Ms. to Frau". The head of the season, Janina Göx, impressed those present with a lively presentation about the training of the dogs, which takes place even in wind and weather. The volunteer members of the relay gave the group the opportunity to experience the impressive skills of their four -legged friends by looking for the hidden participants in the group. Comee-on reports that this type of practical demonstration was exciting for everyone involved.
Lea Roth, also a member of the relay, informed the group about the role of the rescue dog squadron within the fire brigade. This was officially integrated into the Lüdenscheid volunteer fire brigade on November 25th. With 13 dog handlers and more than 14 dogs, the season offers valuable support in the search for missing persons, be it in the forest, in urban areas or in particularly difficult inserts such as car accidents.
The training mission
The training of the rescue dog teams, consisting of dog handler and dog, takes an average of between 1.5 to 2 years and takes place on site under the guidance of trained trainers. As the ASB , the training content is extremely versatile and range from basic medical knowledge to the tactics and orientation in the field. In addition, the teams have to take an exam every two years to confirm their operational capacity.
A total of four dogs and 13 dog handlers are active in the season. These include Janina Göx, Anke Hohei and Julia Schwalm, who together ensure security in the Lüdenscheid region. The dog handler is alerted directly via the fire brigade control center.

The possible uses of the rescue dogs are diverse. In addition to the search for space, in which the dogs search independently in forest and meadow areas, MAN trailers are also used. These consequences of the freshest trace of a specific person based on a odor article. A third -important area of application is the debris work, even if it is currently not processed by the Lüdenscheider relay. In the front row, the rescue dogs are not only in this country, they can also be used internationally for disasters such as heavy earthquakes.
The fire brigade hopes that the commitment of the rescue dog squadron will not only be of interest in operations, but also when recruiting new members for the fire brigade. After all, motivated and suitable dog breeds such as retriever, Belgian shepherd dogs and Australian Shepherds are very popular. In order for the season to be optimally prepared for all challenges, work on training and integration into the fire brigade is continuously working, which makes the use of the animals all the more valuable.
The city of Lüdenscheid can therefore be proud of cooperation with this committed and talented rescue dog relay - an initiative that is intended to strengthen volunteering in the fire brigade and thus also help the many people who are in need.
