Appenzell wrestlers in the fight for the crown: Today in the ring!
On Sunday, June 9, 2025, things will get exciting in Ziegelbrücke, where the first Glarus-Bündner Cantonal Wrestling Festival will take place. In the midst of the impressive backdrop that the Linth Canal offers, the Appenzell wrestlers in particular are full of energy and will fight against strong competition from the entire region. The organizers, led by OK President Fridli Beglinger, are looking forward to numerous participants and spectators in the festival area of the commercial vocational school, which has proven to be an optimal infrastructure.
Martin Roth leads the delegation from Appenzellerland and is aiming for his second wreath of the season. Roth has already impressed at the Thurgau Cantonal Wrestling Festival and secured victory in the final round of the Herisauer Obedwickelet. His goal is clear: another wreath is needed! In addition to Roth, Roman Wittenwiler and Thomas Kuster are also running. Wittenwiler has already won two crowns this season and is considered a strong performer, while Kuster is in good shape despite minor injuries. A podium place could be on the cards here.
More Appenzeller talents
In addition to the trio, other Appenzell wrestlers are also hoping for good placings. Marcel Mösli is aiming for his first crown and is going into the competition full of motivation after strong performances. Florian Giger, Sepp Fuster, Dominik Brülisauer and Andreas Inauen are also available to show their talents. In the search for a surprise, Mathias Jäger, the ambitious non-Kranzer, could also have a decisive say.
However, the competition never sleeps. The top favorites for the wrestling festival are Armon Orlik and Samuel Giger, who have made a name for themselves in the last few months. Her speed and technique are sure to captivate both spectators and wrestlers. Werner Schlegel and Roger Rychen have also registered, although their participation is still in doubt. The exciting mix of well-known greats and up-and-coming talents promises top-class competition.
Swinging as a fascinating martial art
But what makes swinging so special? As watson.ch explains, it is a duel sport with over 150 attack options, although there are no weight classes. This significantly increases the variety of techniques. Fighters have a variety of attacks to choose from, and a successful attack requires not only strength, but also speed and concentration. In this sense, versatility is crucial to success in swinging.
For many participants, the Glarner-Bündner Cantonal Wrestling Festival represents the last endurance test before the Federal Wrestling Festival (ESAF), which will take place on August 30th and 31st, 2025. The OC and the tireless volunteers have been working hard on the organization since autumn 2024 and preparing for the big day. The anticipation among the wrestling fans and the organizers alike is great.
So it will be exciting to see how the Appenzell wrestlers do and whether they can continue their winning streak at the first Glarus-Bündner Cantonal Wrestling Festival. Let's take the opportunity and support the fighters on Sunday in Ziegelbrücke!
