Wück appoints EM squad: German footballers rely on experience and talent!

The national coach of German footballers, Christian Wück, announced the 23-member squad for the upcoming European Championship in Switzerland. This tournament runs from July 2 to 27, 2025. Captain Giulia Gwinn and striker Lea Schüller from FC Bayern are particularly in view, both of whom will play a decisive role in the squad.

An interesting turn in the squad announcement is the nomination of 20-year-old Cora Zicai from SC Freiburg. She celebrates her comeback after having to pause due to muscle complaints. In a clear contrast, the omissions of Felicitas Rauch and Nicole Anyomi, who had critically commented on Wücks' communication, were therefore not taken into account. This shows that the trainer pays a strict focus on team dynamics to create a harmonious environment.

The key players

The group looks strong at their leadership figures. Ann-Katrin Berger is the oldest in the squad at the age of 34 and has a lot of experience, while Sara Däbritz is an important support for the team with 108 international matches. The squad also contains eleven players who were already Vice-European Championships in 2022 and thus bring valuable tournament experience.

But there is also unpleasant news. Lena Oberdorf will not be able to participate in the tournament for over a year due to a cruciate ligament tear. Younger talents such as Alara Sehitler from FC Bayern are only listed on call for the time being, which shows that Wück's focus is on the balance between young and experienced players.

preparation and goals

The DFB women start their tournament preparation on June 19 in Herzogenaurach. Wück's endeavor is to give the players the necessary support in order to be able to call up their best performance. In his statements, he emphasizes that the team has a lot of potential that was already visible at Olympics. Trust and joy of playing are the key to success for him.

The start of the European Championship is already certain: On July 4, the German players will compete against Poland in St. Gallen. In addition to Poland, Denmark and Sweden also belong to the group, which will be a challenge for the Germans in terms of sport. Wück sees the team well positioned and is convinced that confidence in the skills of the players will be decisive in order to successfully cut off in this competition.

In the current FIFA world rankings, Germany takes third place with 2030.88 points, behind the USA and Spain. This gives Wück and his team additional incentive to not only give a good picture at the European Championship, but also to play the title.

The next few weeks will be crucial to set the course for a successful European Championship and maybe take a big step back to old strength in women's football.
