Wück calls up the European Championship squad: German footballers rely on experience and talent!

Today, the national coach of the German women's footballers, Christian Wück, announced the 23-man squad for the upcoming European Championships in Switzerland. This tournament runs from July 2nd to 27th, 2025. Wück, who recently took office, is relying on a mix of experience and talent to lead Germany to success. Particular attention will be paid to captain Giulia Gwinn and goalscorer Lea Schüller from FC Bayern, both of whom will play a crucial role in the squad.

An interesting twist in the squad announcement is the nomination of 20-year-old Cora Zicai from SC Freiburg. She is celebrating her comeback after previously having to take a break due to muscle problems. In clear contrast to this are the omissions of Felicitas Rauch and Nicole Anyomi, who were critical of Wück's communication and were therefore not taken into account. This shows that the coach pays close attention to team dynamics to create a harmonious environment.

The key players

The group looks closely at its leaders. At 34, Ann-Katrin Berger is the oldest in the squad and brings a lot of experience with her, while Sara Däbritz is an important support for the team with 108 international matches. The squad also contains eleven players who were runners-up in Europe in 2022 and therefore bring valuable tournament experience.

But there is also unpleasant news. Lena Oberdorf will not be able to take part in the tournament for over a year due to a torn cruciate ligament. Younger talents like FC Bayern's Alara Sehitler are currently only listed on call, which shows that Wück's focus is on the balance between young and experienced players.

Preparation and goals

The DFB women start their tournament preparation on June 19th in Herzogenaurach. Wück's aim is to give the players the support they need to achieve their best performances. In his statements he emphasizes that the team has a lot of potential, which was already visible at the Olympics. For him, trust and enthusiasm are the key to success.

The start of the European Championship has already been decided: on July 4th the German players will play against Poland in St. Gallen. In addition to Poland, Denmark and Sweden also belong to the group, which will pose a sporting challenge for the Germans. Wück sees the team in a good position and is convinced that confidence in the players' abilities will be crucial to being successful in this competition.

In the current FIFA world rankings, Germany takes third place with 2030.88 points, behind the USA and Spain. This gives Wück and his team additional motivation not only to make a good impression at the European Championships, but also to play for the title.

The next few weeks will be crucial in setting the course for a successful European Championship and perhaps taking a big step back to the old strength in women's football.
