Ingolstadt shocks Jahn Regensburg 3-0 in the Danube derby!

In the Danube derby between SSV Jahn Regensburg and FC Ingolstadt, the tension was literally palpable. On Friday evening in the Jahnstadion it was said: no room for mistakes, because both teams were only separated by two points in the table, with Jahn having little room for improvement with 22 points. Ingolstadt, in 20th place and just one point above the relegation zone, desperately needed a win. So it was a real six-point game, and the omens could hardly be more exciting.

Around 10,210 spectators gathered in the stadium in clouds of fog, some hoping for revenge for the last disappointing games. FCI coach Michael Wimmer immediately relied on new faces and brought in John Posselt from the start. A risky move, but one that didn't pay off. The Ingolstadt team, on the other hand, were ready and showed from the start that they didn't want to settle for another point.

Ice-cold hits turn things around

Already in the 20th minute the guests struck ice cold. After a free kick from Dennis Kaygin, it was Jonas Scholz who headed in to give FC Ingolstadt the lead. Just three minutes later, in the 23rd minute, the second goal came from Julian Kügel, who benefited from Regensburg's defense and put the ball into the net after a major mistake by Gebhardt. Regensburg seemed shocked and initially couldn't find its way back into the game.

The Regensburg team tried to react, but offensive ideas remained in short supply. The chances were few and far between, and the few that were available were not taken advantage of by newcomers Posselt and Wurm. After the break, Leo Mätzler came into play to stabilize the defense, but that didn't lead to the desired result either.

Ingolstadt passes the Jahn

Ingolstadt was always dangerous, especially through Marcel Costly, who appeared several times in front of the Regensburg goal. In the end, their attack effectively closed the bag: In the 90th minute, Costly scored after an assist from Christensen to make it 3-0 for the FCI. This was a very important victory for the Ingolstadt team, which secured them four points ahead of the relegation zone and allowed them to overtake Jahn Regensburg.

The Regensburg team, on the other hand, now have to work on their offensive in order to make up ground in the coming games, including against MSV Duisburg on matchday 21. So the situation remains exciting 3rd league, which has served as an important link in the German football league system since its introduction in 2008. While some teams are fighting for promotion, for others, like Jahn Regensburg and FC Ingolstadt, the fight against relegation is on the agenda.
