Kaufbeuren and Ostallgäu: Joining MVV brings a mobility revolution!

A major change in local public transport is entering the decisive phase in the Allgäu. The city of Kaufbeuren and the Ostallgäu district are about to join the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). This could not only improve the region's connectivity, but also have a positive impact on local transport prices. Merkur reports that the issue will be on the agenda of the Ostallgäu district committee on July 4, 2025, where comprehensive consultation and decision-making is planned.

Joining the MVV would advance the integration of Kaufbeuren and the district into the Munich local transport area. Mayor Stefan Bosse emphasizes that this can only be achieved in joint efforts with the Ostallgäu district. **An interaction that will be important not only for mobility, but also for economic cooperation.**

Diverse local transport options in Ostallgäu

A look at local public transport (ÖPNV) in Ostallgäu shows that it is already well positioned today. With over 30 bus routes, connections are guaranteed across the board - all towns with more than 200 inhabitants as well as many smaller towns are integrated into the network. Special fare offers such as family day tickets and a new senior fare round off the offer. Demand-oriented transport is also available, which is an important mobility option, especially in less heavily frequented regions. Citizen Ostallgäu highlights that over 3 million passengers use the district's bus service every year.

The cooperation between the Ostallgäu district and the Ostallgäuer Verkehrsgemeinschaft (OVG) ensures optimal route routing, timetable coordination and tariff setting. The Transport Service Center plays a central role here by informing citizens about local transport and supporting them with ticket orders.

The importance of future-oriented mobility

The development in public transport is not only evident locally, but also at the national level: the number of passengers in public transport has been increasing steadily since the pandemic, as the VDV data shows. Every day, the VDV companies transport around 26 million passengers by bus and train, which significantly reduces the burden on road traffic. In 2023, these systems saved more than 10 million tons of greenhouse gases. The trend is clearly towards sustainable mobility, which is not only environmentally conscious but also has economic advantages. VDV reports that the sustainable mobility industry in Germany achieves a value creation of around 118 billion euros.

On July 4, 2025, the district committee in Marktoberdorf will set the course for future mobility in the region. A topic that affects us all and is worth taking a closer look at and having a say in. The Kaufbeuren city council will also address these developments at its meeting on July 29th. {{ Ostallgäu district administrator Maria Rita Zinnecker has not yet made an official statement on the subject. }} The crucial days are upon us and the region could be heading towards a new, connected future.
