Inclusion in focus

Art plays a central role in the social perception of people with disabilities. The UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, which passed in 2006 and came into force in 2008, has shaped this debate for over a decade. In Germany, the Convention has been legally valid since 2009. Germany hereby commits to the implementation of comprehensive measures for equal treatment of people with and without disabilities. This is also reflected in the inclusion debate that deals with the social disadvantage of people with disabilities

The current discussions about inclusion and the so -called disability studies (DS) underline the importance of a reflected examination of the topic. The focus is on aspects such as education and social participation. Inclusion -oriented pedagogy and university projects adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, such as the Labores 30 at the University of Siegen, strive to reduce barriers and to increase the visibility of people with disabilities in cultural operation. Art not only takes up a representative function here, but can help to break down taboos and to bring about positive turns in the perception of disabilities.

opportunities of art and culture

The preparations for the exhibition "Our colorful Ostallgäu" underline the possibilities that art offers as a medium to promote inclusion. As also becoming clear in the discussions about disability studies, artistic arguments can help to question perception and evaluation routines and to promote the discourse to promote participation. "Art is a field of action that is influenced by the inclusion debate," said an expert. The freedom that arises from participative and inclusive approaches not only offer artists: inside with disabilities a platform, but also enrich the general cultural scene.

The exhibition in Marktoberdorf is therefore much more than just an art show - it is part of a crucial social process that serves the goal of promoting social justice and creating a cooperation that enables people with disabilities full participation in cultural life. Do not miss this colorful moment and immerse yourself in the creative worlds of the Ostallgäu!
