Storm chaos: flash floods and sirenal arms meet Immenstadt!

On Monday evening, June 30, 2025, strong thunderstorms moved across the southern Oberallgäu and provided chaotic conditions in the region. The clouds that moved from the west over Lake Constance towards Immenstadt brought storm, lightning and, above all, heavy rain. The lake promenade on the Großer Alpsee was flooded within a very short time. The floor could not absorb the water simple enough, which led to an underpass on the B308 in Immenstadt, which also ran full of water. Drivers were faced with the choice: driving through the water or taking a detour. According to the police, however, the fire brigade in Immenstadt remained without any significant operations. Allgäu Zeitung reports that the siren howled in the neighboring community of Untermaiselstein at around 10 p.m. - probably a technical defect that appeared during the thunderstorm and was heard until 10:40 p.m.

But the storms were not only limited to the Allgäu. There were also devastating mura exits in Tyrol, which threatened numerous people. In the municipality of Gschnitz, a civil protection alarm was triggered on July 1, after a severe storm with hail and heavy rain. Here, emergency services had to evacuate around 100 inhabitants immediately. With a Black-Hawk helicopter, those affected were brought to safety, while others were asked to stay in their houses and avoid basement rooms. Merkur reports that several during damage to houses and streets, the parish cherry Maria Snow was directly affected. Overall, campsites also had to be evacuated and numerous protective huts had to be sealed off until further notice. The situation in Tyrol remained tense, but fortunately no personal injury has been reported.

The causes of the Muren

The frequent degeneration events in Tyrol are not new. These consist of a dangerous mixture of water, rubble, wood and earth material that moves into the valley at high speed. According to an analysis of the geologists, there is a connection between the frequency of murs and climate change, which changes the intensity of precipitation. can reach up to 10 meters per second and cause great damage. In recent years, the number of muries has increased, which has caused regional authorities to plan more protective measures to protect the population. Over 110 million euros are planned for these measures for 2024.

Immenstadt, a city with around 14,507 inhabitants and an area of 81.44 km², is also not alone in this critical weather. Mayor Nico Sentner reacted to the events and will surely be in contact with the citizens in the coming days to inform about further measures and ensure security. Well -known institutions and events in the city, such as the Allgäu mountain farmer museum and the Allgäu Triathlon, are faced with the challenge of adapting to the changing climate conditions. While the city is working towards its annual highlights, nature remains an unpredictable factor that continues to act in the background.
