Feldraine in the Nuremberg region: Protect and experience nature!
A new impetus for biodiversity in the Nuremberg region: With the project “Together preserve, promote and establish Feldraine” the Bavarian Cultural Land Foundation has taken an important step towards preserving our nature in 2023. Feldraine are these narrow strips that grow between our fields and are lush with grasses and herbs. These lively lines are not only a dream for the eyes, but also a feel-good dream for countless living beings. They provide winter quarters for insects, provide birds with the food they need and offer rabbits a hidden place. It's just a shame that these valuable habitats are becoming increasingly rare in the Bavarian agricultural landscape. But here in the Nuremberg region there is reason for hope!
The project will be presented in more detail at the coming field evening, which will take place on July 15th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Anyone interested is invited to stop by and find out about the goals and content of the project. Topics such as the definition of the field terrain and the different plant species are on the program. In addition, the practical part is not neglected: two local project farmers report on their experiences and explain what can be done to preserve such areas. The event takes place near Vorra, where two project field rains can also be viewed. Registration is recommended so that everyone can find space.
Practical experience and exchange
What makes things even more exciting? There is already a second date in autumn: on November 20th the conference “Feldraine - a cultural asset with opportunities and challenges for agriculture and nature conservation” will take place in Engelthal. Here, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., participants can delve deeper into the topic and acquire further knowledge. The detailed program and all information can be found on the website of the Bavarian Cultural Land Foundation. If you have any questions or would like to offer your space, you can contact Nathalie Ritter directly, who will be happy to support you by email or telephone.
A comparable project is also underway in Thuringia, where three new field meadows with a total area of 2.1 hectares were created in the Kyffhäuser region at the beginning of 2023. Such flowering, species-rich strips that function as important biotopes have long been rare there. Of course, the goal here is also to promote existing biodiversity and to give something back to nature through targeted sowing with regional wild herbs and grasses. Project manager Tobias Ehrhardt also emphasizes the need to maintain existing structures while creating new ones. The project in Thuringia will be active until 2026 and is funded by the Federal Biological Diversity Program - clear proof that “there is something going on”!
For all nature lovers, there is also a photo competition that runs until October 31, 2023 and focuses on the fields rich in flowers and insects. An excellent incentive to actively engage with nature and capture the beauty of the regional flora and fauna.
In summary, it shows that progress is being made on various fronts. The projects in Bavaria and Thuringia prove that a lot can be achieved through initiative, commitment and cooperation between municipalities, agricultural businesses and nature conservation organizations. We can't wait to see what positive effects the coming years will bring - and together we can preserve the beauties of nature!
