Nuremberg: catching up in the bicycle climate test – this is how the city is improving!

Nuremberg's commitment to cycling friendliness is currently being recognized. The new ADFC bicycle climate test has named the city the biggest “catcher” among large cities. In a competition with over 200 cities, Nuremberg scored points through targeted measures and improved infrastructure. In addition, the well-rated bicycle rental system VAG_Rad benefits cyclists in the city, as reported VAG.

The bicycle climate test, which is carried out every two years by the ADFC, serves as a barometer for cycling in Germany. Around 213,000 cyclists from all over Germany took part in the current survey in autumn 2024, and the results are available on the ADFC website. Here, cyclists report on their experiences and the conditions in their cities, which provides important feedback for traffic planners and politicians. This time, the eleven-year implementation of the test was of great interest, as it also evaluated and supplemented the success of local cycling promotion ADFC.

The assessment of the cycling climate

The evaluation is carried out using a school grading system, whereby the cities are classified into different categories. In the largest category with over 500,000 inhabitants, Frankfurt am Main comes in first with a grade of 3.49. Nuremberg itself has improved greatly in the category of larger cities, while other cities such as Düsseldorf and Essen are also recording negative trends RND reported.

category placement City note
Over 500,000 inhabitants 1 Frankfurt/Main 3.49
200,000 – 500,000 inhabitants 1 Muenster 2.97
100,000 – 200,000 inhabitants 1 Erlangen 3.13
50,000 – 100,000 inhabitants 1 Tübingen 2.77
20,000 – 50,000 inhabitants 1 Baunatal 2.53
Up to 20,000 inhabitants 1 Betting wrestling 1.55

The trend across the entire survey is that over two thirds of cyclists feel unsafe in road traffic. A large number have also reported that they are often attacked by cars for overtaking too closely. The grade for coexistence in traffic is 4.05, which makes it clear that improvements are still necessary here. On the positive side, however, 10 of the 15 largest cities are showing an upward trend in bike-friendliness.

In summary, it can be said that Nuremberg has made big steps in the right direction through continuous improvements and measures in the cycling sector. But there is still a lot of work ahead of us in the future to further optimize the cycling infrastructure and increase the satisfaction of cyclists.
