Sad swimming accident: 66-year-old drowns in the Main-Danube Canal

On Wednesday afternoon there was a tragic incident in the Main-Danube Canal near Dietfurt in the Neumarkt district in Upper Palatinate. A 66-year-old man was found floating lifeless in the water by the crew of a pleasure boat. It didn't take long for the boat crew to call for help and the rescue workers were immediately alerted. On site, a doctor determined that the pensioner probably died of natural causes, which makes the situation all the more tragic.

The man was rescued by boats from surrounding water rescue services and fire departments. This incident adds to worrying statistics: 48 people have already drowned in Bavaria in 2025, which represents an increase of 13 cases compared to the same period last year. Nationwide, at least 236 people drowned in the first seven months of the year, according to data from the German Life Saving Society (DLRG).

A worrying statistic

In 2024, a total of 70 people drowned while swimming in Bavaria. What is particularly alarming is that almost one in four victims whose age was known was over 70 years old. The DLRG points out that previous illnesses often lead to swimming accidents in older people. Overestimation of oneself and a lack of caution also play a major role.

The incident in Dietfurt should be a memorial for all water sports enthusiasts and bathers. Correct behavior in the water is crucial to avoid accidents. A good dose of caution and respect for the dangers of water can save many lives.

Bavaria's waters are popular excursion destinations, but safety should always come first. Those who want to enjoy nature should be aware of the risks and make informed decisions to avoid such tragedies.

We hope this tragic incident helps raise awareness of the dangers in water. You can find more information on the BR.de website or on the DLRG website.

So let's all have a good hand and take responsibility - for ourselves and for each other!
