Schäffler Mühldorf dances into the new year: premiere in front of the town hall!

The anticipation in Mühldorf a. Inn is big, because the newly founded group will start on January 17, 2026 at 10 a.m Schäffler their first season with a traditional dance in front of the town hall. After an intensive preparation period and a successful dress rehearsal, the 18 dancers, supported by two backup dancers, six sutlers, three crown bearers/barrel hitters and two puppets, are ready to complete around 50 performances spread over the entire season.

On the musical side, the Schwindegg brass band with around 13 musicians will ensure the right atmosphere. Club chairman Thomas Linhart, who is already in his seventh season of dancing, will be actively involved in the club he co-founded for the first time. Newcomer Cedric Vorbach is also excited about the challenges ahead and working together in the group.

The tradition of the Schäffler dance

The origins of the Schäfflertanz go back to 1517, when the Munich population was supposed to be entertained with a happy dance during the plague. The idea was to attract people back onto the streets with colorful, green tires and music. To stop the Black Death, the dance is performed every seven years, based on the assumption that the plague also returned at this rhythm.

The first Mühldorf Schäfflertanz took place in 1862 by the “Die Quelle” club. From 1890 onwards, TSV 1860 Mühldorf e.V. took over this tradition and combines classic Bavarian elements with modern enthusiasm in its performances. The dance melody and the figures are based on the Munich model and include numerous striking elements such as the march, king snake and tire swing.

The new era of the Mühldorfer Schäffler

The establishment of a new division “Schäffler” at TSV Mühldorf in 2013, after the successful anniversary in 2012, shows the will to keep this tradition alive and promote it. The promotion of traditional customs is firmly anchored in the association's statutes. In the past, the Schäfflers were mainly recruited from the ranks of the TSV, but today access is open to interested parties outside the club in order to meet the requirements and bring a breath of fresh air into the team.

In order to attract the next generation of dancers and supporters, the group organizes regular participation in Schäffler meetings throughout Bavaria and especially at the Mühldorfer Volksfest. There is also a current appeal to the population to find new members, dancers and sponsors. So the Schäfflertanz remains powerful and colorful, ready to celebrate and pass on the Mühldorf tradition.
