Kirchdorf joins the Mühldorf district plant: energy transition for everyone!

At a crucial meeting on Thursday, August 13, 2025, the Kirchdorf local council set the course for the future. In a meeting chaired by District Administrator Max Heimerl, the committee discussed joining the new “Landkreiswerk Mühldorf a. Inn”. Kirchdorf originally had concerns about possible high costs and decided against joining. However, Heimerl put convincing arguments on the table: Membership could ensure affordable renewable energies and increase independence from third-party providers. Finally, after Heimerl's presentation, the local council gave the green light for membership, which indicates a rethink on the part of local politicians.

As the Innsalzach24 reports, Kirchdorf is located in the growing Mühldorf district, which also affects housing prices. In this situation, Heimerl emphasized the urgency of investing in energy transition projects. It is important to actively involve citizens in the project and only act if it is wanted locally. However, local councilor Josef Schneider also expressed concerns about financing, but Heimerl assured that all projects will be implemented profitably within the scope of financial possibilities.

The founding of the district plant

The new district plant will be founded as a municipal company and will be put into operation after approval by the government of Upper Bavaria. As early as July 29, 2025, 23 mayors and the district administrator signed the contracts for the district plant - Kirchdorf was not known to have been a part of it up to this point. But with the approval of membership, the idea of developing more efficient and sustainable energy solutions like this through coordinated efforts and the exchange of resources comes closer Mühldorf District Office highlights.

The official founding event was held in the meeting room of the Mühldorf district office. The mayors gathered there and signed the consortium agreement and the statutes of the newly founded company. Symbolically, the mayors turned on a large board with light switches - a sign that "power is on - lights on". This board provides space for additional counters and signals that other municipalities can also join the district work in the future.

A look into the future

The main goals of the district plant are the development and implementation of renewable energy projects in the communities. Citizens and regional companies should be able to actively participate in these projects. The initiative is becoming increasingly relevant at a time of large-scale energy transition in Bavaria, as it not only contains regional resources, but also supports local value creation.

The dynamics of the energy transition are already noticeable in other German municipalities, as a look at the Digital database on the municipal energy transition shows. More than 200 practical examples are documented here, which serve as inspiration for other municipalities to efficiently implement climate protection measures and renewable energies. However, the piggyback principle is proving to be a challenge for many communities, which are often overburdened financially and with staff.

Kirchdorf's step into the community of the district plant is not only a financial but also a symbolic sign of commitment to a sustainable future. It remains exciting to see how the projects develop and what new opportunities they create for the authorities and citizens.
