What is happening in our region to draw attention to a serious issue? In Miltenberg and the surrounding area, more than just a day of action will be dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women this year. The time has come on November 25th, but the equality offices of Aschaffenburg and Miltenberg as well as the city of Aschaffenburg are planning numerous events and campaigns as part of a month of action to raise awareness of gender-specific violence. The numbers are alarming: violence against women is widespread worldwide. One in three women in Europe will experience physical or sexual violence during their lifetime. According to reports, 180,715 women in Germany were affected by domestic violence in 2023, an increase of 5.6% compared to the previous year. These and other frightening statistics come from an analysis by Federal Agency for Civic Education and show the scope of the problem. These are not just isolated cases; Gender-specific violence affects women from all social classes.

Month of action against violence

Various events are planned as part of the campaign month. Among other things, a play entitled “Female Born” will be performing through Mespelbrunn on November 13th, followed by another performance on November 20th in the Obernburg Community Center. These events are a great opportunity to find out more about the topic - entry is free, but registration is recommended. On November 24th, the exhibition “Born Female – a collection of images on the discrimination against women” will open its doors at the Aschaffenburg adult education center.

A highlight of the month will be the 40th anniversary of the SEFRA association, which will be celebrated on November 25th. On this day, guests are invited to take part in various lectures and panel discussions. There will also be an information evening by the equal opportunities bodies, which will deal with the new Violence Assistance Act and its effects on the local assistance system.

Offers of help and social responsibility

The topic is not only of local importance, but also highlights a global problem: According to the Reporting by the German Institute for Human Rights 35% of women worldwide are affected by violence. Domestic violence rates rose sharply during the pandemic, underlining the relevance of current initiatives.

Posters that are distributed in the region provide information about offers of help for those affected. A nationwide helpline (08000 116 016) is available around the clock to support women in emergency situations. It is important that every individual becomes aware of the issue and takes responsibility so that violence against women no longer has a place in our society in the future.
