Memmingen Children's Festival: On the way to intangible cultural heritage!
In Memmingen we are working hard to promote the children's festival for intangible cultural heritage. Dagmar Trieb, who has chaired the children's festival committee for three years, emphasizes how important the support of the Memmingen population is for this project. It is a community project that aims to strengthen the tradition of the city and its festivals. One goal of the committee is to highlight the importance of the children's festival as part of the often overlooked intangible cultural heritage, because according to bavarikon.de it's about more than just celebratory occasions.
Intangible cultural heritage includes diverse elements such as oral traditions, music, dance and crafts. It not only reflects traditions, but also a deep understanding of nature and our communal life. Knowledge is passed on across generations, giving the sponsoring groups a feeling of belonging and keeping historical working methods alive.
A strong symbol for the culture
UNESCO launched an international convention for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage in 2003, which Germany joined in 2013. This agreement aims to promote cultural diversity and strengthen mutual respect. Since then, a “Bavarian State Directory of Intangible Cultural Heritage” has been launched in Bavaria in order to make cultural diversity visible Allgäu newspaper reported. The various formats of intangible cultural heritage are summarized there in order to inspire a broader public for these important cultural expressions.
The upcoming steps to promote the children's festival are the focus of Dagmar Trieb's commitment. She explains that every citizen can make a contribution to this cause. Be it by simply sharing information or participating in the festivities, every action counts. Only through joint efforts can the children's festival be included in the state directory as a living tradition.
The children's festival - more than a celebration
The children's festival in Memmingen is not only a happy event, but also a festival that is deeply rooted in the city's culture. It is all the better that such a festival now has the chance to be recognized as intangible cultural heritage. It would be a strong sign of preserving all the customs and traditions that shape our identity.
The intangible cultural heritage exhibition not only shows the need to renegotiate these traditions, but also highlights the importance of passing on knowledge and skills to the next generation. If Memmingen is perceived as an innovative place for culture and tradition, that also gives hope for the future. This is also made clear by the various chapters of the exhibition, which, among other things, address the transfer of knowledge, sustainable activities and bringing customs to life.
Dagmar Trieb’s clear message is: “Help us secure our children’s festival for the future!” Anyone who would like to get involved has numerous opportunities to become active. Finally, intangible cultural heritage means not only the preservation of customs, but also the living and celebration of these traditions in our community.
