Memmingen honors cemetery culture: a place for memories and encounters!

There is reason to be happy in Memmingen: the city's cemeteries have now been officially recognized as part of the intangible cultural heritage of cemetery culture. This significant award was celebrated today, October 30, 2025. Mayor Jan Rothenbacher emphasized the role of cemeteries as places of remembrance, peace and encounter and emphasized their importance in society.

A sign with the inscription “Intangible Cultural Heritage Cemetery Culture” has already been attached to the forest cemetery. Further signs are being planned to make this importance visible at the district cemeteries. Memmingen is also part of a nationwide network to promote cemetery culture, which further strengthens the city in its pioneering role. The award was originally decided in March 2020 by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs on the recommendation of the German UNESCO Commission, but could not be published immediately due to the corona pandemic.

Cemetery as a place of community

According to Anna Lutter, deputy director of the city's cemetery administration, cemetery culture includes numerous activities that help people mourn, remember and shape space. This shows how important cemeteries are for integration and social cohesion. They help prevent loneliness and serve as a meeting place for families and relatives. Historically relevant dimensions can also be found in the old cemetery and the Jewish cemetery in Memmingen, which underline the city's cultural identity.

The importance of cemeteries goes far beyond mourning. They are also important places for nature conservation and biodiversity, providing habitats for numerous animals and plants and helping to preserve local flora and fauna.

Initiatives to promote cemetery culture

Another aspect of recognition is the “Distinguish Cemeteries” campaign, which aims to increase appreciation for these heritage sites. The initiative aims to make the public aware of the diverse opportunities that cemeteries offer for both the living and the deceased. The Intangible Heritage Cemetery Culture Board of Trustees created this award to celebrate the cultural and social aspects of these spaces.
