Memmingen Airport success story: Onwards to 5 million passengers!

When people talk about Memmingen, they not only think of the pulse of the city in Swabia, but also of its bustling airport. The Focus has found that Memmingen Airport has established itself as a charming alternative to the large airports of Munich, Stuttgart and Zurich. On the way to becoming a hub that is valued not only regionally but also nationally, the airport attracted an impressive 3.2 million passengers in 2023, and an increase to over 3.5 million passengers is also expected for 2024.

What makes Memmingen Airport so fascinating? On the one hand, it is privately financed and deeply rooted in the region, which contributes significantly to its popularity. With a catchment area that includes more than 11 million people within a two-hour drive, the airport offers ideal connections for anyone who wants to travel quickly and easily. Memmingen is now one of the third largest airports in Bavaria - after Munich and Nuremberg.

An airport without seasonal gaps

A real secret behind the airport's success is the consistently high number of passengers, which is not only evident in the summer months. Even in winter, ski tourists and families are often looking for a quick connection. Ryanair has permanently stationed several aircraft that fly all year round - this brings not only travelers but also passengers to the region.

The airport has shown a good hand with its short distances and efficient processes. Current projects, which include, among other things, the expansion of the apron, additional parking positions and the modernization of the terminal and security lines, show that we are also ideally positioned for the future. The strategic goal is to increase passenger numbers to five million in order to grow closer to Nuremberg and Hanover.

Memmingen – more than just an airport

The city of Memmingen itself not only has a dynamic airport to offer. With around 42,000 inhabitants, it is the fifth largest city in the administrative region of Swabia and is often referred to as the “gateway to the Allgäu”. From Roman times to the Thirty Years' War, Memmingen has an eventful history. Even today, the city still has good transport connections: Memmingen is perfectly linked to other cities via the A7 and A96 motorways and the train station, not only with Munich, but also with Lindau and beyond.

The residents can look forward to a lively cultural life. Events such as the Wallenstein Festival or Fishermen's Day attract many visitors. Sights such as the historic old town, St. Martin's Church and the city museum are real eye-catchers and bear witness to the city's rich history. Not only are businesses flourishing in Memmingen, but also numerous small and medium-sized companies that contribute to the region's economic stability.

With a progressive approach that is deeply rooted in the community, Memmingen is becoming increasingly important as the region's economic and transportation center. So it's no wonder that Memmingen Airport is on a solid growth path - a development that is likely to continue in the coming years.
