Criticism of Landshut exhibition: Former hostages demand reconstruction
The aircraft wreck of the "Landshut" faces a new challenge: it is currently being prepared for a planned exhibition in Friedrichshafen. But while the preparations are progressing, resistance is stirring. In an open letter to Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), 13 former hostages sharply criticized the museum education approach of the Federal Center for Political Education. They perceive the presentation as "frontal lessons around a bunch of wreckage" and are convinced that this form of discussion does not do justice to the historical event. Above all, the signatories call for a partial reconstruction of the "Landshut" in order to present the connection to the drama around the Schleyer gap. Finally, the "Landshut" was a Boeing 737 that was kidnapped by Palestinian terrorists in 1977, which underlines the scope and complexity of the topic.
It is interesting that Jürgen Vietor, a former co-pilot of the "Landshut", and Dieter Fox, a former member of the special unit GSG9, also include the signatories of the letter. These people are not only affected, but also bring a unique experience to the discussion. The colleague Vietor and the other signatories emphasize that a clear visibility of the "Landshut" as part of the historical event is essential to fully understand the tragedy of kidnapping.diverse perspectives on the project
However, the project also has defense lawyers: The “Support Circle Landshut” has spoken out for the plans in another open letter to Minister Dobrindt. They believe that the "Landshut" can be involved in the architecture and design of the exhibition. A "visual impression of earlier appearances of the machine" is sought, possibly using media means. The defenders of this presentation reject the allegations of frontal lessons and emphasize that workshops are planned instead to promote a deeper examination of the terrorist autumn 1977 and the lessons for the defensive democracy.
we remember: In September 1977, left-wing extremist groups in Germany kidnapped Hanns Martin Schleyer to force the release of detained RAF members. The tragic climax came when a PFLP command kidnapped an Lufthansa machine (LH 181) on October 13, 1977. The dramatic moments of kidnapping, which finally led to the successful liberation campaign of GSG 9, are unforgettable. These events not only pointed out the dangers of international terrorism, but also changed the view of the security situation in Germany and beyond.
The topic of the exhibition and the different views illustrate how strongly the events of 1977 still have an impact decades later. Different perspectives of former hostages and experts: Inside the presentation of the "Landshut" not only reflect on the complexity of the event, but also the current social discourse situation on terror and security.
