Four girls from Kaufbeuren are fighting for children's rights worldwide!

In Kaufbeuren, four students from the Schrader School are taking matters into their own hands when it comes to children's rights. Maria, Lilith, Finja and Lisa, all in fourth grade, thought together how they could give children around the world a stronger voice. With their initiative they want to draw attention to grievances and actively advocate for change. “I feel sorry for the children who don’t have enough,” says Maria, summing up the compassion.

Lilith adds that hunger and thirst for many children is an injustice that cannot be ignored. Her project idea came about in ethics class, where she talked about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child languages. “We want to be active and not just talk about it,” emphasizes Finja, while Lisa underlines the concern: “We children can become active ourselves.”

A creative approach

To spread their message, the girls designed their own logo and recorded a song. But that's not all! They are also starting a signature campaign to encourage people to stand up for children's rights. They have already started collecting at various events and the school festival to support their cause.

A special highlight is the planned voice collection at the weekly market, where the girls hope for a great response. Their goal: to attract as many supporters as possible in order to advocate for more justice and the implementation of children's rights. Support is available at planned events, in the Kaufbeuren corner or directly by contacting the Schraderschule in Kaufbeuren.

Rights for all children

But what are children's rights actually? According to the UNICEF Children have rights everywhere in the world, regardless of where they live. These rights are enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which came into force on November 20, 1989. An impressive number – almost all countries in the world have committed to ratification!

The Convention contains 54 articles and is based on four fundamental principles: the right to equal treatment, the best interests of the child, the right to life and development and the right to be heard and to participate. These principles ensure that no child is disadvantaged due to gender, origin or other characteristics and that the needs of the little ones are always in the foreground.

Awareness of children's rights is constantly growing, and UNICEF is bringing a breath of fresh air into schools through materials and innovative ideas such as the primary school package “You have rights”. The selection includes free downloads, design ideas for school lessons as well as action recommendations for students and is a great basis for actively and creatively bringing the topic into lessons in the future.

So it's not just up to the teachers, but also the students themselves to stand up for their rights. Just like the four students from the Schrader School, who approach the matter with enthusiasm and ideas - that gives courage for more justice and a strong signal for the rights of all children!
